| Excerpts from John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" Bunyan was given a remarkable series of visions depicting the earthly walk of a believer. In those visions, the interpreter showed him things that were very important for him to understand as he started his new life as a Christian. The interpreter took him into one room and in that room he saw an iron cage. In the cage there was a young man. Bunyan enquired, "Sir, why are you in the iron cage? Why are you so miserable?" The young man in the iron cage replied thusly : "Once I was an ardent witness for Jesus Christ and I believed that my eternity was going to be filled with rich rewards. Others around me commended me and also felt that I would have great rewards in heaven for my life and my witnessing. But, I became slack. I did not pay attention. I allowed little things, little sins to get hold of me. I indulged in little things and eventually they became big things and they overcome me. I became a sinner and I did not get back to the Lord before I died." Oh, how we must remember this! How we must embrace the cross and cry out for hunger and thirst for righteousness all the days of our lives. We must not indulge in pleasures of this world. So many start well in their faith but few finish the race. There are many casulties. They give up because of the tremendous pressures and temptations. Therefore, we must put on the full armour of God so that we can stand. May I plead with you not just to study the Word but to let the truth and wisdom of God get into your innermost being so that it becomes a part of you. It is then that you will stand by your faith. |
