In 1954 Youghal was chosen as the site for the film Moby Dick, the greatest sea yarn ever written. Every morning during its production, the cast & crew would assemble in Paddy Linehans Pub, where John Huston would outline his plan for the day. From our lounges you can view in comfort Youghal Bay, the river Blackwater and the surrounding hills. In this peaceful setting you can again relive the tale that is Herman Melvilles Moby Dick. This renowned establishment, opened in 1880, has been in the Linehan Family ever since, making it the oldest family run pub in Youghal.

MOBY DICK - THE PLOT
This classic story by Herman Melville revolves around Captain Ahab and his obsession with a huge whale, Moby Dick. The whale caused the loss of Ahab's leg years before, leaving Ahab to stomp the boards of his ship on a peg leg. Ahab is so crazed by his desire to kill the whale, that he is prepared to sacrifice everything, including his life, the lives of his crew members, and even his ship to find and destroy his nemesis, Moby Dick
HERMAN MELVILLE
American author, best-known for his novels of the sea and his masterpiece MOBY-DICK (1851), a whaling adventure dedicated to Nathaniel Hawthorne. "I have written a wicked book and feel as spotless as the lamb," Melville wrote to Hawthorne. The work was only recognized as a masterpiece 30 years after Melville's death. The fictionalized travel narrative of TYPEE (1846) was Melville's most popular book during his lifetime.

"All that most maddens and torments; all that stirs up the less of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable in Moby Dick. He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it." (from Moby-Dick)
