2000 JNSE Purdue Open Final Leaderboard (end of regulation play) Dave Smith 67-66=133 (-9) -- Round 2: 35-31=66 Joel Ferchoff 68-65=133 (-9) -- Round 2: 30-35=65 Jeff Kissel 71-67=138 (-4) -- Round 2: 31-36=67 Chuck Johnson 73-70=143 (+1) -- Round 2: 32-38=70 "Club House Chat" ------- Dave Wrote: Well, one stroke better than yesterday.... I was very, very, suprised to see my name in the lead! Having the wind at your back on alot of these holes today was both fun and challenging.! The highlight was a hole-in-one on No.14... with a 4 iron hit into the wind, I aimed slightly right and let the wind bring it in to the hole....it was pretty on reverse replay! The other shot of mention was a 48ft putt for birdie from the back fringe downhill on No.11. I stroked at about 36ft and let it roll in! And on No.12 'i think it was' where I could have drove the green... I chose to lay up and pitch up close to take the sure birdie. I only missed 1 fairway and 5 GIR... and stroked 27 putts... This was alot of fun! the 36 hole format is good for mid week tourneys. Joel is one back, and with normal conditions.... I don't know about my chances.... See ya all in Honolulu tomorrow! >> Dave, don't go to Honolulu quite yet, you have to stay in Pebble Beach and play a playoff! << >> ;) Congrats, you and Joel tied and will play a playoff to determine the 2000 Purdue Open << >> Champion. And that was one heck of a back nine! Good luck to both of you! << ------- Joel Wrote: Here are my results for round 2 of the Purdue Open. A round of 65 (-6). I missed 3 fairways, 3 greens, and took 29 putts. I made 7 birdies and one bogey. This was a better round than yesterday. I got a great break at #12 today. I went for the green off the tee. I bounced in the rough, then rolled through the cliff into the rough in front of the green. From there, I chipped on and made birdie. On #13, I laid up today, and made birdie. The only weak spots today were on #14 when I missed a 5 footer for par, and on #15 when I missed a 4 footer for birdie. Well, that puts me at -9 for the tournament, which is pretty good, considering that I haven't putted that well this week. Anyways, it was fun playing this course this week. If this contest ever happens, I would say you have a pretty good chance at winning it. My favourite part of this course is the par fives. #6: This might be my favourite hole on the course. You pretty much have to hit the fairway here, otherwise you're facing bogey in the face, especially if you find the heavy rough. The shot for this green is one of the most fun shots out there (right up there with the 18th at Kapalua). It's difficult to get the correct amount of fade, and even if you try to lay up, getting distance control to get somewhere near the green is tough. I'm glad I play a fade, as this hole is impossible to play with a draw! #10: This is just a hard hole, especially if you miss the fairway. There is really no easy spot to lay up, and that has caused me problems in both rounds, as I found fairway bunkers, and had to scramble to save par. #13: As you said, this location begs to have a par five on it. Great risk/reward, and you kind of feel like an idiot hitting an 8 iron with your second, and then having to hit a 9 iron in, so the urge to go for it is greater, and hitting and holding that island with a 3 wood is very difficult. >> Joel, thank you for all your kind comments. Congratulations on your round; you and Dave << >> are tied and will have a playoff to determine the 2000 Purdue Open Champion! << ------- Jeff Wrote: I played a lot better today on the front nine, shooting a 31, but struggled in in 36 mostly because I took way too many risks on holes like #10, #12, #13, and #18. I knew I'd probably need an amazing score to even come close to winning, and it turned out I would have needed a 62 to tie you guys, so I wasn't really even close... great playing, you two! ------- Chuck Wrote: A doublebogey finish on 18 leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth. Again, fun course! Thank you for putting on a little tournament. I enjoyed the course. >> Thanks to you for participating, as well as to Joel and Dave. << ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- Round 1 Leaderboard Dave Smith 33-34=67 (-4) Joel Ferchoff 32-36=68 (-3) Jeff Kissel 33-38=71 ( E) Chuck Johnson 35-38=73 (+2) "Club House Chat" ------- Dave Wrote: Here are my scores... bogied that 18th hole again even after doing it in my practice round.... I knew the ball would drop off if I missed left... but I forgot to go right and went down the slope and had to 2 putt to get back. Made a 30+ footer for my first birdie and a 45 footer for my second. ------- Joel Wrote: Here are my results for round 1 of the Purdue Open. A fairly disappointing round of 68 (-3). I missed 4 fairways, 7 greens, and took 29 putts. I made 6 birdies and 3 bogies. I started off on fire, by nailing putts from 23 feet and 30 feet for birdies on #1 and #2, and added another at #3. I added another birdie at #6 to put me at -4. Near the turn, I hit the skids. On #8, I drove into a fairway bunker, nailed it over the green into the bunker, and had to sink a 12 footer to save par. On #9, I hit another fairway bunker, and ended up making bogey. On #10, I hit a fairway bunker with my second, and was lucky to save par. Got it to -5 after birdies at 11 and 12. The disaster came on #13. I had about 230 yards to clear the water, and 240 to the pin. I stupidly went for it with a 3 wood. The shot hit about the last pixel of the cliff, bounced way in the air, and ended up back in the water, and I ended up making bogey. A few inches further, and I make birdie. That really let the wind out of my sails, and I didn't make any more birdies. On #18, I three putted, missing a 4 footer for par. >> Joel, that is why I love that hole. ;) -- Jeff << Anyways, this is a pretty challenging course, so this round (hopefully) shouldn't be in too bad shape. ------- Jeff Wrote: I played the worst round I've ever played on this course, shooting a 71. I had never played it under dry conditions before and that makes it a LOT tougher because the greens are very difficult. Oh, well. Tomorrow's another day. ------- Chuck Wrote: Very fun, well designed, fair course. I got lucky on two holes or my score would have been worse. Nothing compared to what you jnse pros will shoot. >> Chuck, the two eagles are impressive, not lucky! - Jeff <<
