Fabric Stores
Hancock Fabrics
In Cary (about 2 miles from my home) My personal favorite out of the local fabric stores I've been to. Hancock Fabrics has some of the nicest fabrics I've seen for making garb. They usually have some wonderful linens, including a linen-rayon blend that I swear by (it drapes so nicely!). Hancock carries really nice wools in the winter, and they always have a great selection of brocades that while they can be pricey, are really good for garb. This is also a good place to buy items like interfacing and buckram.
Joann Fabrics
In Cary Bigger than Hancock, Joann's is another great place to buy fabric. Linen tends to only be in stock around springtime, but when it is in stock they always have a huge variety of colors and weights. They also carry the linen-rayon blends, plus I've seen some beautiful wools and raw silks there. This is also the place to go for regular cotton broadcloth and trigger, plus they've always got a metric ton of muslin (very useful stuff). They also have beautiful trim and ribbon. There is a good-sized discount section where you can often find some good buys, and they have more notions and sewing supplies than you can shake a stick at. Their Arts & Crafts section is worth a look too--I've often gone there to buy beads.
Sew Unique This place is small and does not have quite the selection of Joanne's or Hancock, but they have a giant selection of buttons and other notions at good prices. They often carry some really nice linens and wools, and usually have some nice looking upholstery fabrics on sale.
Carolina Sew & Vac Though this store mostly sells sewing machines and vacumn cleaners, they do have a small selection of fabric. They don't have the wide variety that Hancock or Joann has, but they have cotton broadcloth in a rainbow of colors, plus they carry some gorgeous linens. Worth checking out! This store is located in a shopping center off Capitol Blvd and I believe it is right before the split that takes you out to I-85.
