Purpose of Master Guides
There are many reasons why an individual decides to become a Master Guide (MG). It may be a calling to leadership, it may be the expected next step in Pathfinders, or it may be curiosity and the desire to learn new things, sharpen existing talents, and meet new people. Whatever the motivation, the reason for the MG program in the Seventh-day Adventist Church remains the same - service to Jesus Christ our Savior. The crux of this is summarized in the Pathfinder Aim: "The Advent Message to all the world in this generation."
The MG's special part in spreading the gospel is to work with the Youth of the Church. MGs are called to minister to a wide range of youth which include: Pre-kindergarten (Little Lambs), Kindergarten (Eager Beavers), Primary Grade School (Adventurers), Intermediate Grade School and Middle School (eTrackers), High School (Varsity) and College age through the time young people establish families of their own. MGs may choose to focus their education and training on any of these age groups, and specialize there; or become a generalist and work throughout all the age groups.
MGs are to endeavor, by the grace of God, to exemplify the ideals of God and the Seventh-day Adventist Church by leadership and example. With so many broken families and continuing degeneration of society it is more important today than ever before to offer a way to live a lifestyle in harmony with God and man. MGs are to exemplify, through personal influence and leadership a joyful, active social, educated and spiritually enriching Christlike life. This includes assisting the church in any roll required, but in particular by assisting in youth related activities like Sabbath School, Pathfinders and Adventurers, and Advent Youth (AY) organizations.
With this in mind, MGs are the core to keeping Seventh-day Adventists youth close to Christ and in the church; reaching out through existing church programs, to youth outside the church. MGs will play a key role in church and youth evangelism efforts, and make themselves available to assist in area, conference and union activities. Among the many responsibilities of MGs is to train other youth leaders and Pathfinder/ Adventurer staff in leadership, outdoor skills, hobby and craft techniques, and vocational skill building activities; so in turn those leaders can teach them to the youth.
Fort Collins Master Guide Paths
Historically, the MG path as been based on working with the eTracker and Varsity groups. The Fort Collins Seventh-day Adventist Church, under the direction of Michael Cookenmaster, Ed.D., is encouraging potential MGs to focus on a path that suits their God-given skills and talents, using the pilot curriculum from the Florida Conference.
Master Guide - Adventurer
The Adventurer Master Guide is designed for those who have a calling to minister to Pre-K through Elementary School aged children (through 4th grade) and their families. Special emphasis will be placed upon childhood development, family evangelism, age sensitive introduction to later Pathfinder activities, and participation in the Adventurer program as members of the greater Pathfinder Club.
Master Guide - eTracker/Varsity
The requirements are designed to give an invested Master Guide the knowledge and experience to lead in Pathfinders working with eTrackers or Varsity aged children ; and be familiar with God's first and second books. (God's first book is the Bible. Mrs. White loved the beauty of the natural world. To her, nature was God's second book, which further revealed his nature.)
Master Guide - Youth Leadership
Not every Youth leader is involved with outdoor and craft activities. The up-and-coming Youth Leadership path will emphasize the spiritual, social, recreational, and evangelistic knowledge and experience needed to successfully lead in Adventist Youth or Sabbath School Activities.
Pathfinder Leadership Award (PLA)
The PLA is a North American Division level of achievement for invested MGs. The basic difference between an invested MG and PLA is that a MG is trained to teach and lead young people in a practical manner. A PLA has additional training and experience to teach both young people and Pathfinder staff practical skills; but has spent a little extra time with theory, philosophy and doctrines.
Pathfinder Instructor's Award (PIA)
After being invested as a PLA, those who have a calling to teach Pathfinder Staff can go on to earn the PIA. The PIA is a level of achievement designed to recognize adults who have the talent and desire to get up in front to teach other adults. PIAs should be competent instructors of almost any general Pathfinder topic. PIAs will be responsible for instructing at Conference Sponsored MG, PLA, PIA and Pathfinder Staff Basic training events.
