Confused. That was the best word to describe Maria's current state of mind. It wasn't because she had just come out of science or the news that Liz and Max had found a strange smooth oval object in the desert. What was causing Maria's head to spin? This fact - that morning Michael Guerin had asked her to come to his apartment after school. A million reasons 'why' raced through Maria's head.
Deep down she hoped it wasn't because he wanted to repeat his 'no attachments' speech, the thought remained though even though she reasoned that he had asked her rather nicely to come over, almost like friends. Friends, that wasn't the usual way he started his 'run-away' behaviour - this behaviour just didn't fit in with the whole Michael attitude towards things this puzzled Maria in such away that she had never been before.
Why was she always guessing where she stood with him? Sure no guys had actually asked her out but thinking about it one night she had come to the conclusion that she would have had to say 'no' anyway, and she wasn't even dating Michael but still deemed that cheating! Her head swam again and she tried to block him out of her mind.
Maria quickened her pace. The sooner she got to his place, the sooner she wouldn't feel so confused she rationalized well she hoped she wouldn't. Why was he always so confusing? She doubted even she was that confusing. Sighing she pondered the probable fact that life would always be way more confusing with unearthly guys
~~~~~
Why was Maria so confusing? Michael pondered this as he unconsciously cleaned up his apartment. He was so nervous he had skipped the last period of school. Sure in the past he had skipped whole days for no reason other then the thought 'why bother?' But ever since his emancipation he hadn't missed a class for fear of losing his safe freedom, and the discovery that Maria was in two of his classes
When this whole Max/Liz vision thing had started he had hoped Maria just hadn't told him about the visions she had had. Then determination set in - he would give Maria what Max could give Liz. He hadn't meant for it to seem like she was using her, but it had.
In truth he was over the moon that his alien side could rationalize kissing her again. Hell, his human side was doing back flips at the news, and shed even been the one that had suggested they should experiment
The fact that she had faked the visions had hurt more then he would ever like to admit, not just because he realised she had thought she had had to lie, or looking back to the way he handled it. The hurt came from the fact that he couldn't make Maria feel as good as Max made Liz feel.
~~~~~
Maria just wanted to be with him. It was basic, but that was all she wanted, she had told him she hadn't cared about Liz's flashes, but he had still looked disappointed in her and of course did a Michael-esque run.
Maria now walked noticeably slow down the apartment corridors. All the fantasies she had created on the way over here in the car as to *why* he had invited her would be past development as soon as she hit his stone wall that he would probably put up. Why did she live today like tomorrow would never come? After he had thanked her and kissed her forehead that morning he had held her, then they had both simultaneously let go of each other and made conversation about work - how Jeff Parker had given him a job at the Crashdown. Staring at each other he had smirked slightly then asked if she could come over after school, before work that night.
Maria's head had spun and she had barely made an audible yes before she had felt her skin flush. That was it, the reason why at lunch -- when Liz and Max had turned up not caring about the trouble they were in with their parents or the classes they had missed -- why Maria's head hadn't spun, it was already spinning and it couldn't turn any faster.
~~~~~
It had been a bizarre day, and not only for Michael, Isabel too had also been late for school, and she seemed happy, almost smug. Isabel cool, yes that's how Isabel was, but relaxed? She had resemble Alex more then her usual guarded school-self today.
Why had he asked Maria over? His nerves weren't because of a lack of ideas about what they could do, oh no, he could summon millions of things to do. Most of them involved tabasco sauce, but he shrugged that little detail off as an 'alien quirk'. He couldn't place the origins of his nerves, he guessed at possible reasons but none seemed to fit the bill entirely.
This was crazy  nothing much has changed dramatically, its just Maria she would make conversation, ease into a nice easy atmosphere, mutual respect, that sort of thing, and this would be situated somewhere on the couch with the pillows just fluffed and when the time was right he'd move closer.
Maria knocked softly on his apartment door, believing her knock was too soft she raised her hand again. Closing her eyes she let her fist swing down towards the flat surface of the door. But instead of connecting with wood her hand was swallowed by flesh, firm and hard. Strong fingers were locked around hers. Her eyes suddenly flew open.
