Evil

What about piercings? I know "good" Jewish people with piercings. What is the difference, other than the fact that tattoos depict something? And if its that fact that is the "evil" part, what if one got a tattoo that said "I love G-d"? And yes, unfortunately tattoos are now fashionable and trendy. They were not meant to be this and should not be this way. Tattoos are meant to be deeply personal, and you adorn your own flesh with various designs that represent something you love about life or about yourself to make that aspect really become part of you. That is the beauty of tattoos, and is unfortunate that there are those who think "wow tattoos will make me cool". Who cares about being cool when you are talking about making an indellible mark on your skin? I have one tattoo. It represents many things in my life, including: my youth, music that changed my life, and my search for my identity. I am not jewish, but i completely respect the decision whether or not to have a tattoo, especially due to religious reasons. My question is: why is marking your body in one way perfectly acceptable, and another way evil?

Thanks for the email.

Not all piercing is permitted for Jews. But that's another story...

Tattoos are not inherently evil. They are forbidden to Jews, and permitted for Gentiles.

I define evil as doing something against G-d's will. Therefore, a Jew that ate pork has done an evil thing, whereas a Gentile that ate pork has not. The same principle applies with regard to tattoos.

I hope this helps.
