| AUTHOR'S NOTE: This poem is my second most famous poem, but it is probably my favorite. I entered it in a contest on Guideposts.com and won. I also had requests for it to be put on a couple websites as well as recited at a talent show or spring show or something. However, I hope that the poem's success is because readers recognize the emotion and heartfelt conviction that I put into words here. This poem was not written for popularity; it was written in a hopeless attempt to express my feelings for a woman that I care for more than anything in this world. | ||||||||||||
| You Are Not Yet Mine to Have | ||||||||||||
| By David Jansson | ||||||||||||
| You are beautiful, the woman of my dreams, And I care for you beyond what words can say. But, for this reason, for my love, I will guard myself from declarations And ask you to do the same For you are not yet mine to have. In marriage, two fleshes are united as one. But until that day, that wedding night, I will watch my hand and shield my mind. Intimacy is a gift from God, Reserved for man and wife, And you are not yet mine to have. As your body is yours alone, so is your heart. Until I say, I do, I consider you another mans wife And will treat you like a sister. Do not pour out your heart to me, things you might regret, For I should not receive them As you are not yet mine to have. Please dont say, I love you; A phrase I wont return At least until I can commit With a ring and a promise for life. I wont lead you on with tawdry words Since you are not yet mine to have. Though I refuse to say the words, Let my actions speak for me. You will know how much I value you When I treat you like a queen. Dont depend or cast your faith on me For you are not yet mine to have. In the future, at the altar, your groom may not be me. I will find him on that wedding day. Shes a priceless jewel, Ill say to him And present you, white and pure. I kept her guarded, just for you Since she was never mine to have. Life may throw us curves and hills. Who knows what the future holds for us? Though now I watch your heart and soul From promises and words I cannot keep, I hope Ill be that man And one day say that I am yours And you are finally mine to have. |
