The Story of the 84 Mercury Grand Marquis
The story of the 84 mercury that will be one of my derby car rides for the 2000 season began for me the night of March 31st.We had some dinner guests over and as the night drew to a close they mentioned that they would be going to the Elmira City Police auction the next morning.the auction would begin at 10:00 AM and I needed to get to the bank first thing.we got to a packed impound yard at roughly 5 of 10:00.I sent Julie to register as we got there.it took almost 20 minutes for her to register and during that time the auction began.I watched helplessly as a rust free 1972 Cadilac went to the scrap yard for $100.It was confiscated for a traffic violation so I knew it ran.I started to scout for good cars for my use in demolition.I spotted a few but the first was the chevy landau which I picked up on my 3rd bid.then hungry for another car I followed the auctioneer along til we came to to the big brown boxy mercury.I quickly looked her over and thought "hmm..never seen these used before".It looked stout as hell.as the scrap yard made the first bid I quickly looked underneath at the frame and it was perfect. So I jumped up with my card and put up my bid card just on the "going twice".
the junkman then bid on my "going twice".I instantly held up my card and she was mine! but don't feel bad for the junk man he picked up 27 cars out of 60 cars sold that day including the 72 Cadilac I mentioned.now this was on a saturday and the yard was closed sunday so monday morning we went to drag out the cars.we couldn't get them saturday because the bikes and other junk really clogged up the entry gate. The car was picked up from it's previous owner on a city code violation for not having plates on it and they obviously just let the city have it.I was a little nervous that maybe the engine was blown or something but I put a charged battery in it and heard the fuel pump come up and I thought that was a good sign.she came with out keys so I had to pull the ignition switch out of the column and to my surprise  I cranked it for about 10 seconds and vroom she roared up to life!so I put it in drive and drove it around the yard and to the bottom of the hill.transmission worked so I put her on some pavement and she even laid a little rubber! The next day I cleaned her out.she looked like a garbage dump.between the trunk and back seat I took 4 bags of garbage out of her and began the interior work because it started raining.the first day all I really got out was the headliner and the door panels..the next day was rainy again so I pulled it into the garage and stripped her to the bones! The only thing left in the interior was the driver seat and the steering column, and I had to put the seat back in.it's just easier to pull the carpet with all the seats out. That took me about 5 hours of rippin and tearin and the inside was done.then I grabbed the prybar and hammer and stripped off every bit of chrome and plastic including the fibreglass cowl because it had been pushed back so that it caught on the hood and I found it very annoying.Lastly that day I took/smashed out the heater core and air conditioner, took off the smog pump and a/c compressor and moved the battery and solenoid through the heater core hole in the firewall The next morning just for good measure I shopvac'ed out the whole car to get all the little bits of plastic and screws and finished by removing the wipers and motor .I pulled her out to the spot on the side of the yard where she sits today in the pics.I piled all the metal into a previously derbied 84 cutlass supreme and the rest went into the burn barrel. And that is the Tale of the 84 Mercury grand marquis up til now
