Matt Jones was a decent QB at Arkansas ( 15 TDs 2073 yards) nothing to brag about however, only invited to the combine for his athletic ability. However at the combine he turned a lot of heads. This once no-named razorbacks QB who's team only won 5 games last year, started turning heads with his athletic ability. The first time he was taken notice to was at the Senior bowl when he lined up at wide out. He made a spectacular 1-handed catch against Brian Mcfadden. out of Florida State. With his size he finds it easy to throw off attempted jams at the line. He went up against potential first round CBs and burnt them on nicely run routes. A man with this kind of talent and athletic ability is very coveted by NFL teams. However his downfall is that he played QB for Arkansas. This leaves a big question mark. Can he block?? Can he learn to be a WR in the NFL?? Is he tough enough to go across the middle?? All these question marks make for Matt to fall on NFL scouts draft boards and most likely will leave him out of the first round. Some scouts are looking at him as a TE. He is a former basketball player meaning he will have the leaping ability to beat LBs and Safeties. There is proof in the NFL that former basketball players make great TEs ( Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Jeremy Shockey ) However a huge role for a TE in the NFL is blocking, both run blocking and pass blocking, and blocking is something Matt Jones has never been asked to do, neither in his High School or Collegiate career. However a scout would be stupid to pass up on this guy in the 2nd round. In the mock draft Andy and myself have created we have Matt going to the 49ers with the 1st pick of the 2nd round. I feel a big target like that would be a QBs best friend. A big target to go to when your other receivers are covered and the protection is breaking down. Especially a young QB which the 49ers will have next year. Either at WR or TE in the NFL Matt Jones will be a success, its not often someone with his athleticism and size comes along. |
