Cellnet is a micro-cell radio-based meter reading system that Xcel installed in 1999.  Electric meters have enclosed transmitters, information is sent to neighborhood collectors where it is then relayed to a central office.  The neighborhood repeater hubs are gray boxes located on top of electric poles, usually with two cell phone-like antennas on the bottom facing down and a yagi beam antenna on the top.   They are spaced every 2-3 blocks.

Cellnet is a different system then the Metricom Richochet network.  Richochet transmitters are smaller white-boxes located on streetlight posts next to the bulb.

Saver Switch's allow Xcel to remotely cycle off customer's air-conditioner units during high-peak usage.  A/C's are turned off for 15-20 minute cycles.
