THE HELLENIC SOCIETY OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS
("PANELLINIOS SYLLOGOS DIPLOMATOUHON MIHANIKON
METALLEION-METALLOURGON MIHANIKON")

The Hellenic Society of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers (HSMME) is
a non-profit professional organization of the Greek licensed Mining and
Metallurgical Engineers. In Greek, it is called (take a deep breath!) "Panellinios
Syllogos Diplomatouhon Mihanikon Metalleion-Metallourgon Mihanikon."
This Society was formed in 1958 and its founding members were mainly
the first graduates from the Dept. of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers
of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Incidentally, that
Department of NTUA, the first of its kind in Greece, had accepted its first
students in 1945. However, during the Greek Civil War period (1946-49),
its male students were drafted and, consequently, the first Mining and
Metallurgical Engineer graduate in Greece was a woman, Mrs. Maria Karamatzani
(graduate of 1950). In fact, Mrs. Karamatzani became later the HSMME member
with Member Number 1.
Nowadays, the HSMME counts about 1200 members, most of which are Mining
and Metallurgical Engineers who have graduated from NTUA. However, a number
of them are graduates of foreign (non-Greek) schools of Mining Engineering,
Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Petroleum Engineering, or
even Engineering Geology.
ACTIVITIES
The scope of the HSMME is to promote and protect the Science and the Profession
of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering in Greece. This is achieved through
a number of activities related to this subject such as:
-
Scientific meetings and conferences.
-
Professional development seminars for licensed engineers.
-
Publication and distribution of books and journals.
-
Lobbying at the appropriate authorities (governmental, etc.) for the protection
and promotion of the professional rights of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers
in Greece and EU. Also, the HSMME is always closely observing any matter
related to the Greek Mining and Metallurgical Industry (e.g., mining and
environmental legislation, privatization of mining and metallurgical companies,
energy policies, etc.)
HOW IS THE HSMME GOVERNED
Head of the HSMME is its President that is elected every three years. In
the elections, every single HSMME member who has paid his/her membership
fees is eligible to vote in person or by mail. The President is also the
Head of a 7-member Administrative Board (AB) elected also every three years
in the same elections. The AB consists of:
-
The President
-
The Vice-President
-
The General Secretary
-
The Treasurer
-
The Associate General Secretary
-
Two Board Members
The AB convenes regularly to discuss and take appropriate actions related
to matters of interest to the HSMME. Once a year, a General Assembly of
all HSMME members is held -- usually around mid March -- to check on the
past year activities and budget, and to give its consent (or not) on the
activities that the AB is proposing for the next year. It worth mentioning
here that financially, the HSMME is only supported by the subscriptions
of its members. Contributions are also made by the Technical Chamber of
Greece and companies which place advertisements in pages of HSMME publications.
HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER
In order to become a member of HSMME, you must be a holder of a university
degree in Mining Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering, or in related
fields such as Mineral Resources Engineering, Materials Science, Petroleum
Engineering or Engineering Geology. The annual subscription rates for HSMME
membership for those living in Greece is EUR3.00, and for those living
abroad (outside Greece) is USD20.00. Those who wish to become members should
contact:

(Tel: +30-210-8225613, 8237613; Fax: +30-210-8225613)
Please, note that if you visit the HSMME offices for membership application,

Your Technical Chamber of Greece ("TEE") ID card.
PUBLICATIONS
In the past, the HSMME published a few books related to Mining and Metallurgical
Engineering, but today all publication activities have ceased. The only
exception is the HSMME scientific journal
Mining
and Metallurgical Annals ("Metalleiologika-Metallourgika
Chronika") which still comes out every six months. The HSMME has
also published and still sells a a volume entitled: The Greek Regulations
of Mining and Quarrying Practice (in Greek).
If you wish to have more information about the HSMME, its publications,
etc., you may contact the HSMME Offices at the address given above.
