Dutch Oven Cooking and Camp Gadgets

I love Dutch oven cooking.  There are lots of webpages out there dedicated to nothing but the DO, so I won’t spend a lot of time on each and every little topic.  I will show you some of the stuff I’ve collected over the years to make camp cooking a little more enjoyable.  Owning a blacksmith forge makes it pretty darn nice when you want to make some new gadgets.

At the present time, I own an 8-inch, 12-inch, and 16-inch Lodge cast iron DOs, a 9-inch KampKitchun (a neat aluminum Boy Scout oven), a Camp Chef Ultimate, and assorted cast iron pans, skillets, and griddles.  You just can’t have too many.

I have a Yahoo Group called Camp Gadgetry, not real big, but it’s there.  Check it out and join us if you like.

A fire iron setup that we use when the "guys get together".  It's a five pole system (yea, there's six here because we had an extra rod) that works great.  It allows Mitch to move his pot on and off the fire without bending over.  Smokey Bear wouldn't be too happy with this fire ring....the leaves were raining down faster than we could keep them away.  I guess that is why they call it "Fall".

A close-up of the fire iron system.  The dutch oven is hanging on a double hook which keeps the pot from tipping to the side as it tends to do sometimes when it's on a single "S" hook.  The crane is holding a dutch oven lid lifter hammered from a railroad spike....a nifty little gadget.  The fire irons are made from 1/2 inch mild steel.  I prefer the 5/8" steel, makes for a stouter system.

These two shots show the lid lifter in action.  This deep dish pizza didn't last very long!!

LINKS

No sense in me retyping a bunch of links that someone has already done.  Check out the links on the Yahoo group “dutchovencooking”.  You may have to create a user name and password, but it’s no big deal.  There’s enough links there to keep you busy for a long time.  While you’re there, join the group, there’s usually over a thousand people there with the same interests.  It’s a good webpage!

There’s a couple other cooking groups that are worth looking at.  These are: bread_baking_and_western_cooking
