Lesson 5: Dramatizing Tall Tales
What's on for today and why?
Today we will look in depth at some of the tall tales incorporated into the movie.  Students will break up into groups to discuss the possible interpretations of a specific tale and then come up with a short skit where they present their interpretation of the tale through drama.  So far students have been reading, writing, discussing, and creating visual representations of tales - now they will bring a tale to life through performance.
What to do:
Have the students get into their groups to read over, discuss, and then dramatize their interpretation of one of the tall tales from the movie.  These are some of the tales you could assign with the corresponding pages from the screenplay:

The Witch: pages 10.17-16
Edward Bloom Superstar: pages 24.33-27.43
Karl the Giant: pages 27.43-33.50
The Town You Can Never Leave: pages 35.55-44.64
Seeing the Future: pages 49.69-51(end of page)
The Circus: pages 53.7-64.89
Edward Bloom at War: pages 71.106-78.116
Will Tells a Tale: pages 112.181-119.194

Make sure you stress that they will be coming up with their own interpretation of the tale which means that they can add lines, cut lines, or come up with completely different dialogue.  Their interpretation is their own!  Give them 20-25 minutes to complete this task.  The remainder of the class, approximately 20 minutes, will be taken up by having each group get up and perform their skit.
How did it go?
Did the skits show that they understood the tale and came to some interpretation of the meaning behind the tale?
