Important Lines
– Interpret each quote in your own words and then explain why it is important.
1) Gravedigger:: Give me leave. Here lies the water; good. Here
stands the man; good.
If the man go to this water and drown himself, it is, will he nill he, he goes-
mark you that. But if the water come to him and drown
him, he drowns not
himself. Argal, he that is not guilty of his own
death shortens not his own life.
2) Hamlet :Let me see. Takes the skull.
Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him,
Horatio. A fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. He hath borne me
on his back a thousand tunes. And now how abhorred in my imagination
it is! My gorge rises at it. Here hung those lips that I have kiss'd I know not
how oft. Where be your gibes now? your
gambols? your songs? your
flashes of merriment that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one
now, to mock your own grinning? Quite chap- fall'n?
Now get you to my
lady's chamber, and tell her, let her paint an inch thick, to this favour she
must come. Make her laugh at that.
3) King:
To Laertes. Strengthen your patience in our
last night's speech.
We'll put the matter to the present push.-
4) Hamlet:
Why, man, they did make love to this employment!
They are not near my conscience
5) Hamlet:
But I am very sorry, good Horatio,
That to Laertes I
forgot myself,
For by the image of my cause I see
The portraiture of his.
6) Hamlet:
O, I die, Horatio!
The potent poison quite o'ercrows my spirit.
I cannot live to hear the news from
But I do prophesy th' election lights
On Fortinbras. He has my dying voice.
7) Fortinbras: Let four
captains
Bear Hamlet like a soldier to the stage;
For he was likely, had he been put on,
To have prov'd most royally;
