Film Critic’s Viewing Guide

 

Screenplay Adaptations

 

Follow the screenplay text and make notations about any changes between the text and the film (deleted lines or scenes, extra dialogue, etc.)

 

Cinematography

 

Look for different camera angles, shots, focus, camera movement

(see “Golden’s Glossary of Film Terminology” handout)

 

Lighting & Sound

 

Comment on the use of lighting and sound in the film to create certain affects (see “Golden’s Glossary of Film Terminology” handout)

 

Actors

 

Observe the actors: How do they speak?  Look for accents, subtexts, emphasis, etc.  How do they look?  Look for facial expressions, posture, costumes, etc?

 

Literary Elements/Motifs

 

Look for literary elements within the film including setting, symbols, metaphors, foreshadowing, repetition of motifs, etc.
