1950 - 1967. Thoroughbred stallion. Champion each of his 3 racing seasons. At 2, one poll of turf writers named him Horse of the Year. Fame spurred in part by television appearances; he was racing's first tv personality. Unbeaten at 2. Champion 2-year-old,1952. Missed Triple Crown by a head in the Kentucky Derby, but did win all other major races of the season. Won Metropolitan Mile and 2 other races before injury forced his retirement. 21 wins from 22 starts. Earnings of $785,240. Successful sire. 14% of foals were stakes winners. Sired the champion Raise a Native and a daughter, Natalma, who produced Northern Dancer.
