The Media Magic Guide to Wedding Videography
What's the advantage of hiring someone to videotape our wedding?
Your wedding will no doubt be one of the biggest social events of your life. Months and months in the planning, with a budget averaging about $15,000, this once-in-a-lifetime event is here and gone in just a matter of hours. A professionally made videotape will capture forever all the magical sights and sounds of your wedding day, including many precious moments most brides and grooms seem to miss during all the chaos and excitement. In fact, lots of couples tell us that their wedding tape was one of the best investments they've ever made, because it allows them to relive that special day anytime they want, and create a cherished family heirloom that will be shared for years to come.
Couldn't we just call on one of our family members or friends to videotape our wedding?
Well, you could, but don't expect "Uncle Fred"; and his VHS-C camera to give you professional results. The folks at Media Magic have been working in video production since 1983, and we know all the ins and outs of capturing a once-in-a lifetime event, such as this. We have professional Betacam and SVHS cameras, Betacam and S-VHS mastering, titling, special effects generators, computer-based digital non-linear editing equipment, professional microphones, tripods, and plenty of backup equipment to create a true broadcast quality production. And your other guests are also welcome to videotape your wedding and reception, as long as they let us do our work without interference.
What's the best way to choose a videographer for my wedding?
You have to come to a delicate balance between shopping for price and shopping for quality. Most brides and grooms come to us with a video budget for their wedding already in place. Once you've determined your spending limit, then you can begin to evaluate professional videographers for experience and excellence. Although there is a videographer for every budget, the professional videographer you select must use an SVHS, Betacam or digital camera if you are to get true broadcast quality in your final video product.
What kind of equipment should the videographers use?
To properly cover your wedding and reception, at least two cameras should be in use, along with professional microphones and lighting equipment. Ask each prospective videographer what equipment he or she will use at your wedding, and the background and experience of those who will be handling that equipment.
At what point do the tapes start rolling?
We often start things out on your wedding day with a visit to the home of the bride or other location where the bridal parties are making their preparations. Truly, some of our most touching and emotional footage of the whole wedding event has been gathered as the bride and her attendants are getting dressed. It's easy for us to spend anywhere from 5 to 12 hours covering one wedding, but alloting 7 or 8 hours usually gives us enough time to completely cover all the main elements of a typical wedding and reception.
What the best way to evaluate a professional videotape?
Right off the bat, the video picture and audio should be sharp, natural looking and clear. There should be lots and lots of close-up shots of the bride and groom, the bridal party, friends and family, and all the decorations, food and special mementos. The video should be shot from different angles and perspectives, and all of it should be in focus. Any words or titling on the screen should be easy to read and look professional. The video should be well paced and done in good taste- without a lot of gimmicks. Special effects should be kept to a minimum. They should be used to enhance the story, and should not detract from it.
What's a good length for the final videotape of my wedding?
Media Magic likes to edit your final production down to somewhere between 45 minutes and 1 hour. That would include an opening photo or video montage, pre-ceremony coverage, ceremony, reception and a grand finale montage. Given the fact that we may shoot up to 5 hours of unedited tape, it frequently takes us up to 40 hours to create the edited version. When everythings done, we also give you a copy of all the raw footage, so you can archive these tapes, or browse through them, at your leisure.
Do I have a choice of background music for my video?
Media Magic can compose original music for your wedding tape. Due to legal considerations, if you wish to provide your own music, you must provide written permission from the song's copyright holder before we use the material in your production.
What kind of microphones do you use?
Media Magic uses both wired and wireless microphones. Most wired microphone will give you truer audio reproduction but it takes longer to set up right. Wireless microphones let you set things up a bit faster. Typically the groom wears the "clip-on" mic, called a lavalier. But make sure to check with your church or synagogue to see if there are any restrictions on the use of wireless equipment. Sometime our wireless frequencies can interfere with their public address systems.
Do I need to check with my church to see if there are any restrictions on video?
It is the client's responsibility to find out if there are any restrictions on videography wherever the event takes place and to notify us well in advance. Many churches and synagogues have guidelines, such as no extra lights and no moving around during the ceremony, and such guidelines should be understood and respected.
When we set up, we aim to put our main camera in a spot that gives us a clear view of your faces during the wedding ceremony. However, we can't always do this, because some churches only let videographers shoot from the back of the church or the balcony. So it best to find this information out before you sign a contract with your videographer.
How early do the cameramen need to access the wedding site?
Media Magic asks for access to the site of your wedding ceremony at least one hour before the scheduled starting time. We need that time to set up our cameras and microphones and to test allof our equipment.
Will your videographers attend our wedding rehearsal?
If at all possible, representatives from Media Magic will attend the rehearsal . When you come to us for your final pre-wedding interview (about 1 month prior to the event), we will go over all the details and determine the best camera placement.
Will your cameramen get in the way and disrupt the service?
Absolutely not. Media Magic prides itself on having "The Invisible Cameramen (and women)". We dress formally, all in black, and make every effort to work quietly in the background, unobtrusively and tastefully. We use as few lights as possible, and maintain silence throughout the ceremony.
Should we sign a contract with our videographer?
By all means, yes. It's not wise to hire any professional with just a verbal agreement. A written contract protects both you and the videographer. Make sure your contract is comprehensive and outline things clearly.
Will my photographer and my videographer be able to work together smoothly?
Even though the practice of wedding videography is relatively new, it's been our experience that photographers and videographers, working side by side, get along just fine. Just remember, this is your wedding day, and you're the star of the show, not them, so make sure all your vendors you hire know well in advance that you expect cooperation among them.
Should I order a meal for the videographers?
It's common for us to be on the job for up to 12 hours between the time we arrive at the bride's home and the time we leave the reception. Therefore, its greatly appreciated if you provide a meal for your videographers, and to make sure they're served promptly, so that we are ready to get our cameras rolling again at the drop of a hat...or garter belt! If a meal is not possible, then we will need to take a dinner break, during the reception,off-premises.
What about interviews- how should they be handled?
It's your choice. We can take a camera and microphone around from table to table, gathering comments from your guests. We approach them a few minutes ahead of time, so they can gather their thoughts, or recall a funny story to share with us. That way, no one is put on the spot. We can also put a microphone and camera somewhere in the back of the reception area or in a lobby and invite people to come up and say a few words. In that case, we'll ask the DJ or band member to make an announcement to the guests so everyone gets a chance to give the bride and groom their special messages.
Do you charge for mileage?
Not usually, unless your event is outside a 100 mile radius from Cleveland, Ohio. Then we may have to charge for mileage and other expenses.
Are you flexible on your pricing?
We've spent many years developing our skills in wedding and special event videography, and investing in broadcast quality audio and video equipment. Our prices are based on that, and therefore, not negotiable.
Is it OK if I copy my wedding video?
It is illegal to copy a tape, such as ours, that has a copyright. Besides, those copies that you would make at home would be inferior to the original. Media Magic's copies are made either from our computer editing system or the S-VHS or Betacam edit master and our Elite Broadcast Video Processor . We make sure copies are available to you at a very reasonable price.
When will I get my finished videotape?
Our typical production time is 1-4 months after your wedding. If you want a photo montage for the reception, we ask you to start now collecting your favorite pictures and the music you want to use and give them to us at least a month before your wedding day. That gives us sufficient time to get everything done on schedule, without delay.
What other advice can you share with us?
Don't rush into hiring a video production company. Take your time, look at the company's other video productions, and hire someone you feel you can really work with. Remember price isn't everything- a video is only as good as the creative talents of the production team behind it. Please give us a call, if you have any further questions, and let us work our "Media Magic" for you!
