The Fields of the Nephilim formed in 1984. The members were singer and writer of lyrics Carl McCoy, bassist Tony Pettitt, gutarists Paul Wright and Peter Yates, saxophonist Gary Wisker (who left in 1985) and dummer Nod Wright.
In 1992, the band split up. The former musicians of the band form the band Rubicon. Carl McCoy leaves the goth sound and starts his own project, The Nefilim. In 1993 he releases the single Chaocracy with his new band, and does several gigs, playing old Nephilim material much harder than before. In 1996 the single Penetration is released, followed by the metal album Zoon.
In 1997 Carl McCoy and the former Fields of the Nephilim line up again without Peter Yates, but nothing is released before 2000. The single Nephilim AD includes re-recorded versions of earlier Nephilim songs, Trees Come Down and Darkcell (now called One More Nightmare and Darkcell AD). The band do several gigs.
In 2001 the Wright-brothers found their band The Last Rites.
Fallen is released in 2002, though not supported by the band itself. It appears that the songs are studio outtakes that were put into an album by the Jungle Records who were unwilling to wait for the finished material. The Fields of the Nephilim DVD is released.
In 2003, the official website of the band is opened, announcing that Carl is working on new material.
