| Agate can be found along the Yellowstone River from Billings east, with chances to find it anywhere in the ancestral river valley. The farther east the greater the density of agate. The best time to 'hunt' for agate is later in the summer when the water level has dropped and mud has been washed from the river rocks. It is easiest to spot the agates near sunset when the sun is low and the agates glow in the light. Another 'tell' is the difference in texture from the other river rocks. |

| Agate is widespread through Eastern Montana and not just limited to the Yellowstone River valley but many other river systems both current and ancestral have agate. My unoffical plug here is for a small agate shop in Savage, Montana. The owner is very friendly and he has some amazing cut agate. If you are interested in visiting, head North from Glendive towards Sidney and once you reach Savage you can't miss it. | |||||||||||||
