THE END OF THE LINE

Elias Harrison

Elias Harrison is the earliest ancestor I have been able to link to.

Elias was probably born between 1730 and 1740. I cannot find any information that directly links me to him. Other sources claim there is a letter from Rose Harrison stating that Elisha Harrisons (Ipha Bakers husband) father was John and his grandfather was Elias. She mentions that Mercy (Marcy) Terry married John Harrison, (Eliass son), and that Iphas mother was a Terrell (later found to be Elizabeth Terrell).

I have found quite a bit of information on the Bakers and the Terrells, but I have found very little on Elias or John. What I have found from that time includes an Elisha Harrison as well as John Harrison, Jr. The documents range from 1805 to 1856. I do not what the relationship was between the three of them. You may make your own judgments. The rest of this is pretty well documented through research at the Allen County Library in Indiana.

Jonathan Harrison

Jonathan Harrison (Elias-1)was born about 1750 and probably in Claiborne County, Tennessee. John married Mercy (Marcy) Terry in 1779, Albemarle Parish, Surry, Va. I believe they had a son Elias, and they definitely had a son Elisha and one John, Jr. John, Jr. was a witness to a land transaction where John, Sr. sold land inherited by him from William Terry to John Persinger in Botetort County, Virginia on May 16, 1808. Mercy is the child of William Terry and Rachel Manson (Marson).

Things I have been able to find out about John:

Land Deeds of Claiborne County, TN

Grantor Grantee Consideration Book Page Year
Evan Walters John Harrison $160.00 A 175 1804
Wm. Hord Elias/Elisha Harrison $170.00 A 25 1806
E&E Harrison Wm. Hord $ 1.00 B 230 1809
John Harrison Elias/Elisha Harrison B 219 1809
Elias Harrison Thomas Hoskins $ 60.00 D 28 1812
Neal/Neill Elias Harrison $160.00 G 105 1819
E&E Harrison John Harrison $100.00 S 563 1827
BFC Harrison Mark Hurst $ 75.00 X 508 1856

Again, I do not know the relationship of the Harrisons listed above. Brothers, father and sons, father, son and grandson? I tend to believe they are all transactions between father and sons, with John being the father of Elias and Elisha. BFC would be Benjamin, son of Elias, nephew of Elisha. I have looked for further information but to no avail.

Elias Harrison

Elias Harrison (John-1, Elias-2) was born about 1780 in Claiborne County, TN. I believe this Elias was the son of John and Mercy, the brother to Elisha born in 1784.

His first marriage was to Martha ??. His second marriage (Aug. 19, 1824) was to Nancy Hail (Hale)(daughter of James Lewis Hail b. 1770 in Franklin Co. VA and Nancy Ann Craghead b. 1768) b. 1791 in Franklin Co., VA, d. 1852 in Pulaski Co. KY. He died Sept. 5, 1836 in Claiborne County, TN and is buried in the Brooks Cemetery with his daughter Lavinia and her husband Enoch. His children with Martha were Rhoda b. 1791, Daniel b. 1792, William b. 1804, Celety b. 1808 m. James Prior Parker in Campbell County, and Lavinia b. 1812 m. Enoch Moore. His children with Nancy were Martha b. 7-1825 m. George Kizzee, Mary Ann b. 1829, Catherine J. b. 10-3-1829/1831, and Benjamin Franklin C. Harrison b. 11-1-1834 m. Sallie A. DeBoard 12-29-1859. Sallie died 8-26-1879 at 2:30 in Pulaski Co. KY. BFC remarried to Mary L. Cooper on 1-11-1880. BFC and Sallie had a son Truit Bascom Harrison.

Tazewell Observer - Claiborne County, TN

Elias was mentioned in the Tazewell Observer in the March 26, 1980 issue. BFC, Katharine, Martha, and Mary Ann Harrison were also mentioned in the same issue.

Big Spring Primitive Baptist Church

Elias was a member of this church as he is showing on the 1807 Minutes, being appointed on Sept. 7, 1807, to labour with Sister Nancy Harper for fellowship between her and Brother Ransom Day.

Goodspeeds History of Claiborne County, TN

Elias Harrison served as Trustee from 1818 until 1834.

Elisha Harrison

Elisha Harrison (John-1, Elias-2) was born either in VA, KY or TN, in about 1784. I believe it would have been Claiborne County, TN. He shows as being 26 years old on the 1810 Census of Clay County, KY.

He married Effie (Iphy) Baker on August 28, 1805 in Madison County. Elisha was on the Nelson County, KY census for 1800. Elisha and Effie appear on the 1810 and 1820 censuses in Clay County, Kentucky, and in 1830 on the Madison County, KY census. Elisha died in Estil County, KY in 1847 or 1848. They filled their home with the following children: John (Palestine) B. 1807 (buried at Harrison Cemetery in Sand Gap, Jackson County, KY), Jonathan 1808, George 1809, Polly 1810?, Susannah 1811, Thomas 1813, Alitha 1816, Nancy Jane, 1822, Elisha H. 1823, Nathaniel M. 1825, William Canady 1827, and Sally Ann 1833. The family moved from Madison County to Estil County between 1816 and 1822 and Effie returned after Elishas death to live with her son William. With them appearing on the Clay County Censuses in 1810 and 1820, and the children all showing as being born in Madison County, through 1816, Im not sure which county they were really living in.

George Washington Harrison

George Washington Harrison (Elisha-1, John-2, Elias-3) was born in 1809 in Madison County, KY, and married Rachel Isaacs, born April 1813, on March 3, 1831. George died of flux in Clover Bottom, along with his daughter Iphy, in 1852. Iphy would have been 9 years old and George would have been 43. Flux is the medical term for diarrhea. The children born to George and Rachel are: Isaac 1832, Nancy Jane 1837, John Baker 1839, Iphy 1843, Elisha 1846, Minerva 1849, and twins William and Joseph T. 1852.

Joseph T. Harrison

Joseph T. Harrison (George-1, Elisha-2, John-3, Elias-4) was born April 11, 1852 and married Emaline E. Morris, born 1854, on Christmas Day, 1872 in Jackson County, KY. Joseph is the twin brother to William and named his firstborn son after him. They were fined $25.00 each when they were about 21 for fighting. Josephs nickname was Lying Joe. I can only imagine how he acquired that name. Their children are William Henry 1874, Minerva 1877, Isaac 1879 (buried at Sand Gap Cemetery died 6-20-1962), Elisha 1881, John D. 1883, James 1886, Frank 1890, Jane 1895 and Maudie 1899. His descendants recall stories of Joe constantly being in trouble with the law as well as his acquaintances. William married Icy Farmer. Joseph is buried in McKee and there is no marker.

William Henry Harrison

William Henry Harrison (Joseph-1, George-2, Elisha-3, John-4, Elias-5) was born in 1874 and married Sarah Land Leger in Madison County in 1894. She died in 1956 and he died in 1955. They are buried at the Harrison Cemetery in Sand Gap. Their children are Roy L. 1895, Chester 1897, Charles Jessie 1899 (buried at Sand Gap Cemetery, Jackson County, KY), Lewis 1902, Edith Jane 1905, Goldie Lee 1907, Stanley 1910, Nannie 1913, and Willie, 1916. Roy L. Harrison

Roy L. Harrison (William-1, Joseph-2, George-3, Elisha-4, John-5, Elias-6) was born in 1895 and married Eliza Baker in Jackson County. They lived there for their lifetimes. They were buried in the Harrison Cemetery with his parents and I believe one infant of theirs. Their children are Robert 1917, Carlos William 1918, Russell 1920, Pearl Jane 1921, Leroy 1924, Verlin 1927, Goldie, Margie, and an unnamed Baby Boy. I was able to spend a small amount of time with Roy and Lizzie before they died. I was 11 when Lizzie died but I remember she had a feather bed, which I loved, and she made some excellent biscuits and gravy for breakfast. I remember she had throat cancer when she died. She was a loving, kind woman, but she kept Roy somewhat under control. I think Roy had a wild streak in him and it probably came honestly, with the stories about Lying Joe. I remember hearing of him driving his car extremely fast through the hills of Kentucky and rolling his truck down the hill in front of his house. I dont remember him being a very talkative man, but I remember how he always seemed nice. Roy died when I was 25 and I was able to see him two times after Lizy died. I remember the beautiful view from their home out over the valley. I have included pictures of Roy and Lizy.

NOTES ON THE ENGLISH SETTLEMENT OF VIRGINIA

Virginia was founded by men of the Virginia London Company of England in 1607. It was named after Queen Elizabeth, The Virgin Queen. Women arrived in 1608. Anna Burras married John Layden and gave birth to the first American of English decent, Virginia Layden. At this point Virginia has 100 people residing there, mostly planters.

Between 1607 and 1618 over 1800 people had arrived and over 600 were still surviving in the colony. They were given land as payment for settling the colony and planting, as well as for bringing others to Virginia to settle.

In 1609 there were an additional 250 immigrants of England settling in Virginia. However, they brought the London Plague with them and many were lost.

In 1614 John Rolfe, who was married to Pocahontas, discovered tobacco. Our link includes the Bakers, who married the Bowlings, and the Bowlings were married into Pocahontas' family. The Bakers also married into Princess Aracoma's family.

Land had become very important for the growth of tobacco. This led to taking land from the Indians and causing small planters to sell their land to large planters or grow a different crop. From this began the plantations.

In 1619 a Dutch ship arrived carrying a load of African slaves. Twenty were sold to the colonists. This began slavery in Virginia. By 1700 there were over 6,000 African slaves working on plantations in Virginia.

March of 1622 brought The Great Massacre by the Indians rebelling over the taking of their lands. 1240 colonists survived the massacre.

In 1634 the colony divided into eight counties, Accomack, Charles City, Charles River, Elizabeth City, Henrico, James City, Warwick River, and Warrosquoyorke, the latter becoming Isle of Wright in 1737.

The 1635 Census shows 4914 residents in Virginia.

A division of the Isle of Wright occurred in 1642, becoming Upper and Lower Parishes.

In 1649 the King of England decided to take over control of the tobacco business. This caused the plantation owners to become aristocrats and the small planters to become middle class. The middle class rebelled and began the American Revolution. This Revolution caused the destruction of Virginia as it had been developed under the English Rule.

In 1756 Surry County was divided and a portion become Sussex County.

My Lancaster Family History

The End of the Line

Robert Lancaster, Sr., The Immigrant

Robert Lancaster, Sr. b. about 1635 in England, d. April or May 1720 in Surry County, VA., m. Elizabeth Brockbank, 2nd. Sarah Lewis Bennett (widow of Richard Bennett). Robert Sr. was a carpenter.
Their children were: (by Elizabeth)
Robert Lancaster, Jr., 1669-1739, m. Judith
Samuel Lancaster, 1671-1761, m. Elizabeth
Elizabeth Lancaster, 1673-????, m. Thomas Pitman.

General Notes:

Robert Lancaster Sr. (b. bef. 1631-d. 1720 Surry Co., VA)
His first recorded document of 1652* Surry County, VA Court Records Books I and 2, pg. 4 (1652-1684)November 7th 1652... Mr. John Dibdall did at Court held in this place volunteer and made in open court a petition signed by himself Robert Lancashire and seventy others, and John Collier without timely redress to petition, etc.

"Lancasters, 300 Years in America" by Bayard L. Teigan.

"Lancasters of Trigg County Kentucky" by Jeannie Lancaster, 1316 Shallow Lake Circle, Hopkinsville, Ky 42240

Robert, Sr. is first listed on the tax roll in 1670 with his birth probably between 1635-1645. He lived in Surry County which was a region of highly cultivated fields fed by many waterways and interspersed with winding paths, crude roads, and uninhabited areas, and an abundance of wild animal life.

He served in the County Militia and was listed in the roll of a Troop of Horse.

He was a man of means having attained land and a home. He was involved in the affairs of his community having served on the Jury of Bacon's Rebellion, and accepted care of Thomas White's two children.

He was married twice with his first wife's name unknown to us but their children were: Elizabeth, Robert, Jr., and Samuel. He was a planter who did carpentry work and made barrels. His second wife was Mrs. Sarah Bennett, the widow of Richard Bennett.

Robert Lancaster and Rowland Horsley were granted 473 acres of land on October 8, 1672, on Mattadequon Creek, New Kent, Virginia.

His will is recorded in Isle of Wight County, VA, Great Book. A Robert Lancashear was among the signers of a petition presented to the Government by John Dibdall on November 7, 1652. This record is found in Surry County Records by E. T. Davis, 1964 (covers 1652-1684) page 1. It is not known whether this is the father of Robert Lancaster, Sr. or if any kin. There is a Gawen Lancaster, age 28, who came from London on July 4, 1635. Could he be the father of Robert, Sr.? Or Robert Lancaster of Bristol, Will dated 3 January 1684/65 and proved 13 August 1685. Wife, Anna, Sisters: Mary Lewis, Anne Cooper and Rachel Parret, and Brother: Edward.

Robert, Sr. was the first known patriarch of this family. His high ideals of getting involved, serving his country, and taking care of his fellowmen are good examples for us all to follow. Records in London, England, show a Robert Lancaster was born March 7, 1634, a son of a Robert Lancaster, in Hartshead Parish, Yorkshire County, England. This second Robert Lancaster could be the Robert Lancaster listed on the Surry County, VA tax roll in 1670. Nothing proved so far 4-28-92. WILL proved: 1720
