A Recent Survey on Stored Product Pests in Bangladesh

A preliminary survey was carried out on storage pests infesting food-stuffs in the Rajshahi division, northern region of Bangladesh. Thirty-one species of insects were recovered from the different commercial storage facilities in sixteen different districts of the Rajshahi division. The most common species were the rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae (LINNAEUS) and the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum (HERBST) while the spider beetle Gibbium scotius STAAL and the large flour beetle Cynaeus angustus (LECONTE) were the rare ones. The abundance was higher in mill areas and lowest in the local market. The diversity was very high due to the warm and dry climates in the northern region; the highest incidences of pests were recorded in the Rajshahi district. The percentage prevalence of insects varied significantly from one district to another.
