DREAMS MAY COME TRUE
For days afterwards that moment
kept coming into Susan's head; she could not forget about it, any more than
she could understand it.
She didn't even like Peter Brown. He was the sort of man who annoyed her,
the sort of man her friends seemed to marry and then the rest of their life
complaining about.
She could picture his home life: some woman would wait on him, serve on
him, doing all the house chores; Peter Brown had the arrogant assurance of
someone who had been spoilt from birth by everyone in the family. He walked
the earth as if he owned it.
She simply hated men like that.
So why was he having this effect on her? Why did she feel that strange attraction
when he was in the same room with her?
They spent a lot of time together because it was easier and cheaper to take
the same taxi, to do the shopping at the same supermarket, to share the rent
or the laundry bills.
Yet it seemed that something was missing; the mystery, the thrill of unexpected
moments and feelings…
She detached her mind from thoughts of Peter Brown and tried to give all
her considerable concentration to the affairs of her new client. By the time
he left, Susan was mentally tired. She hadn't felt as she did now; her brain
was racing like an overheated car engine - the flat seemed so cold and empty
without him.
She had a terrible nightmare and she woke up sweating, her hear thumping
and her pulse beating hard in her throat.
This must be love, she whispered and felt a pleasant awareness .
