KING ARTHUR

King Arthur was the son of Pendagron. He was born in Tintagel in Cornwall. He was brought up by an old Celtic magician, Merlin, who taught him the secrets of winning and never being injured in a battle. By proving his strengths and valiance when pulling a sword from a rock, he was elected king. With Merlin's help, Arthur received the magic sword, Escalibur, from the Lady of the Lake. He had to fight many lords, dragons and giants, but he defeated them all possessing the magic power.

He married Guinevere and lived in a castle at Camelot.His knights were the most courageous noblemen in the country and they sat at a round table so that they were all equal in rights and merits. The most famous of them, Lancelot, Gawain, Perceval, Galahad, had to fight in order to protect their king and country. Their behaviour was spotless, impressing by their respect, honour, and generosity.

Arthur had numerous enemies, among whom, the fiercest was his nephew, Mordred. When Arthur went to Rome in order to fight the Roman Emperor, Lucius, he left his kingdom in the hands of his nephew who, in the meantime, had taken control of both the kingdom and Guinevere.Arthur came back to England and defeated Mordred, but during the battle he got seriously wounded. That was the moment when King Arthur decided to give Escalibur back to the Lady of the Lake, asking Sir Belvedere to throw it into the water of the lake. The legend says that he is still waiting to return whenever England needs him. On his tomb, the traveler could read the following verse: HERE LIES ARTHUR, THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING.
