Materials:

A book about a famous Black person

1 12oz. soda can for each student

Construction paper, have several colors for students to choose

scissors

glue

Subject:

Black history and recycling

Objectives:

To have the students learn about famous Black people from the United States and other countries.

To have the students learn that they also can recycle by using that material for art work.

Directions:

The day before you start the project have the students go to the library. Each student will check out a book about a famous Black person. Encourage the students to check out a book of a person from a different country. For example Nelson Mandela from South Africa. The students will take the book home to read. If the student can not read the book, have the student's parent read the book to them. On the day of the project have for each student a piece of construction paper pre cut to wrap around the soda can. The students will draw the body and clothes of their person on different colored pieces of construction paper. After the body and clothes are cut out have the students glue them to the piece of construction that will be wraped around the soda can. Be sure to have the students leave at least a 1 inch space on one side, to glue the other end of the paper. Next, on that same piece of construction paper have each student write something about the famous Black person they chose. Lastly, have the students wrap the construction paper around the soda can tightly and glue. Tell the student to hold it and count to 100. Then carefuly place the soda can upright to finish drying. Younger students may need the help of an adult to do this task.
