With boys you always know where you stand. Right in the path of a hurricane. Its all there. The fruit flies hovering over their waste can, the hamster trying to escape to cleaner air, the bedrooms decorated in Early Bus Station Restroom. --Erma Bombeck

12.05.01I just got back from Fuddrucker's with Kira, Jon, Seung, and Rebekah. At some point during lunch, Jon and Seung started comparing the housekeeping styles of their hamsters. Jon's hamster was a good housekeeper, apparently. It used to put its spilled food back in the bowl. Seung's hamster, who is still around, is messier. Is this a personality thing, or some kind of learned behavior dependent on your place in the hamster litter? Is the oldest hamster sibling the most responsible?
I found a Japanese website called Room of Hamster. The captions for this charming little story (with original hamster artwork) make a nice poem, reminiscent of Tender Buttons by Gertrude Stein:
Hamster's Story
Problem work of impact
by which daily of hamster was recorded!
Surely, you will be greatly astonished
It is a start of "Hamster's story".
[Part.1] Sleep of hamster.
Hamster's sleep time is very long.
sleeps more than the half during a day.
Various sleeping postures are.
For instance, sleeping in this pose.
Or, sleeps in this pose.
Talk in sleep is sometimes said.
Hamster's sleep appearance is happy.
Continues.
[Part.2] The hamster awakes.
The hamster...
Awoke...
Did.
Continues.
[Part.3] The hamster plays.
The hamster plays very often.
Such play was done by using the hamster carriage.
Or...such play was done.
If you think it is so...
It is stupid.
Oh! It will be dangerous!
It was according to imagination.
The most mysterious one is this play.
Continues.
[Part.4] Hamster's cheek pouch.
The hamster cannot talk if there is no cheek pouch. Do you differ?
Had collected in a right cheek pouch.
Do you put in the cheek pouch? It is already full.
What's? Without watching with a lovely pupil.
Hamster's Bun. -end-
The last line is an interpretive puzzle, really, as you'll note that the accompanying artwork references the front rather than rear of the hamster. Perhaps it refers to the bread used in making a hamster sandwich. Or perhaps (and I think this is what the author intended) it posits the hamster as a viable option for the coveted role of Easter-egg-delivering rodent.
