10.31.01 I made tabby cat cookies last night. We were all supposed to bring something for the Hallowe'en lunch today at work, and I signed up for dessert. My plan was to make up some sugar cookie dough, work some orange food coloring through it just a little bit, for the marbled "tabby" effect, then cut them out with my cat cookie cutter. Panic at 9 PM -- where is the cat cookie cutter? I dismantled several cupboards and completely emptied the junk drawer before realizing, wait, I don't own a cat cookie cutter. The last time I made cat cookies was at my parents' home. The cat cookie cutter is somewhere in my mom's pantry, 3000 miles away. So I improvised, using a circle-shaped cookie cutter and cutting out little triangle ears, then dragging a toothpick through the dough to make eyes, nose, a smiley mouth and whiskers. They are well-intentioned and delicious cookies, but somewhat terrifying . . . the mouths, when baked, came out looking like stitches, and the whiskers look like pock marks. I am a fan of friendly Hallowe'ens -- grinning, childlike ghosts; happy witches; smiling cats -- but not the truly horrific, like my cookies.
