6.27.05 I clicked this photo of Sally Cat in the kitchen this morning, and realized again how very, very blessed I feel to be working in such a cheerful, sunny, open space. We redid our kitchen in February.
Most of the changes we made were cosmetic. The cabinets had been dark brown and tired-looking, so we had them painted in high-gloss white enamel paint, and added new hardware. Bob laid down the Pergo floor after we had the existing tile removed (I love a soft floor in a kitchen -- saves my dishes and my back!) and then we had the old white tile countertops replaced with a sand-colored solid surface. The sink is integrated, which is nice, because there aren't the little nooks and crannies to get all gunked up. And we painted the whole thing a Martha Stewart color called "Seedling." (I got the paint chip from K-Mart and took it to Home Depot and had them put it into Behr paint. We painted the kitchen a few times before we got the color just right. Bob is a saint. There are about 5 shades of blue and green behind the stove. Ha.)
We also pulled out an existing breakfast nook that was charming but impractical for our needs, stuck the small round table in the middle of the room, and added a stackable washer/dryer unit and shelves where the bench and table in the nook had been. The bench was u-shaped and weighed a bazillion pounds. The day the Salvation Army came to take it away, I stood peeking out the window holding my breath because I was sure they would decide it was too heavy and turn around and leave. But they just scooped it onto their dolly as if it weighed nothing and wheeled it away, hopefully to a home somewhere with lots of kids in need of a breakfast nook. God bless those men.
I thought I'd post some of the pics here today, and some tomorrow. (I took the non-Sally photos of the kitchen at night, so that's why it's dark out the windows.) My decorating taste runs towards fresh and light. Kind of cottage-y/new country. I am not very sophisticated. :) I wanted the kitchen to feel like spring.
