6.13.05 Our dining room is in the middle of our house. It has no windows, and the kitchen, guest room, hallway, and living room all lead off it like legs on a spider, or perhaps I mean spokes on a (square-ish) wheel.
Anyhow, it has been neglected in terms of decor, UNTIL RECENTLY. (Insert triumphant project-finishing music here.) We have a few older pine pieces from my beloved Ikea, and they've gone a bit orange, as knotty (and also naughty) pine will do after 8 years. And all that matchy-matchy just wasn't working. So I'm leaving the big huge farm table pine, because it still looks nice, and isn't orange-y. But the little cupboard and big china cupboard I decided to paint. The little cupboard is now light blue, an ocean-y blue, the same color that the room I'm sitting in right now is painted. (It's a Martha Stewart color called "Drop of Blue.") Then I distressed it, because distressing covers up a multitude of painting boo-boos, and I still like that look. I love cottage. I love a-bit-banged-up. I like the juxtaposition between gentle colors and rough wood. I'm so happy about it, really, that it's insane. The little pieces of towel under it are temporary until I get those felt things to protect the floor. The cat is Sally. She's permanent. I'm still looking for 5/8" brown gingham ribbon to trim the lampshade, but haven't found it.
You can see the china cupboard next to it, and that will be painted white as soon as I get some oomph to do it. And also distressed.
This was a few days ago. Today I finished up the 3-day project (because I only painted during Claire's naps and at night) of painting a big, long, low bookcase white. This is at the other end of the dining room, and will give us more storage, hooray.
Our house has a lot of strong color in it, and also a lot of subdued color. The living and dining room walls are a Behr soft yellow called Opal Cream. I was going for a beach cottage feeling. So lots of blues and greens, and some red here and there for zing. I'm not sure if you'd like it or not. We like it, but I always have projects going on. Always.
I still owe you pix from the outside beautification project. I'm not one to concentrate on just one project at a time. I have lots of stuff going all at once, like some insane person. But I will get photos up as soon as I think about it.
I LOVE seeing photos of people's houses on their blogs more than anything. It's the voyeur in me. At Christmastime, I always slow the car down and strain to see in through people's windows to get a glimpse of their trees and lights inside. I'm awful. Are you?
