General Time Line:  3 History Blocks

 

Overall Expectation(s):

[      Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of change and conflict, methods of creating change, and methods of resolving conflicts;

 

Warm Up Exercise:

[      To activate previous knowledge, using Popcorn Style, the teacher will ask students up describe the causes, personalities, and results of the rebellions of 1837 in Upper and Lower Canada;

Listen for:

[      Description of the role of key personalities (e.g., Mackenzie, Papineau, Baldwin) involved in the rebellions and the methods they used to bring about change; (p.47, The Ontario Curriculum, History: Conflict and Change)

[      Description of the rebellions of 1837 in Upper and Lower Canada and their impact on ordinary people; (p.47, The Ontario Curriculum, History: Conflict and Change)

Strategies and Procedures: 

1.      Students will begin by verbally discussing the past changes that have occurred throughout the province of Ontario’s history. 

2.      Teacher will guide students towards the key characters (William Lyon Mackenzie, Joseph Papineau et. al) and events leading up to the Rebellions of 1837.

3.      In groups of three, students will discuss Change & Conflict to enforce verbal understanding will be facilitated through a Think, Pair, Share strategy. 

4.      Teacher will ask students to begin to draw a plan for writing the changes that have occurred in their lives, from the point of view of their shoe.
