General Time Line:  3 Social Studies Blocks

 

Overall Expectation(s):

b      identify ways in which the environment molded Canadian Aboriginal cultures;

 

Developing Inquiry/Research and Communication Skills:

b      communicate information, using media works, oral presentations, written notes and descriptions,

            drawings, tables, charts, maps, and graphs.

 

Warm Up Exercise:

b      In groups, students will Think, Pair, Share the following statements:

C       Prior to the written word, Aboriginal People exchanged their knowledge through stories. 

C       What stories do you remember about your own life? 

C       If you were read to when you were little, did you have a favourite story?  What was it?

C       If you ever have children, do you think you will read to them?  Why or why not?

C       If you could make up a story, what would it be about?

C       Would your favourite animal, person, or thing be in it?

C       Role model a story of your choice.

 

Strategies and Procedures: 

1.      Read the students an Aboriginal story of your choice, or ask the students to choose one. 

2.      Discuss the relevant lesson contained in the story.

3.      Ask students to share from their life any similar stories.

4.      Allow students time to share the story of their shoe, (see Visual Arts lessons, and writing lessons)

5.      In groups of two, allow students to document each other’s responses to their stories. 

 

My Teaching Performance:

b      How did students react to the Native Storytelling? 

b      Was the integrity of the Oral Tradition within the Native community conveyed?

b      Was the story constructive, in that it allowed students to creatively begin writing their own story for their shoe?

b      What occurred during the reflection feedback constructive?

b      Is there anything I can do to ensure deeper, richer, learning?

b      What if anything will I change next time?
