Walking in Andy Warhol’s Shoes

Introduction:

 

Ï      read Andy Warhol (Worlds Greatest Artists Series) to students

Ï      discuss the art period which Warhol help influence (Pop Art)

Ï      highlight to students Warhols first break in the art world (shoe illustrations commissioned by Glamour magazine)

Ï      show pictures of different types of shoes taken from different periods of time

Ï      discuss design and function

 

 

 

Lesson 1:   Sketch a Shoe

 

 materials

 an unwanted shoe from home

 cartridge paper

 HB pencil, eraser

 

Ï      role model for students (teach to draw what they see)

Ï      students sketch an used or unwanted shoe

Ï      draw size as is

Ï      look carefully and draw what you see

Ï      take your time and focus closely

 

 

 

Lesson 2:   Designing Shoe Modification

 

  materials 

 coloured pencils

 

Ï      role model for students

Ï      on the page of shoe sketch , students are to brainstorm a list of animals or any familiar ordinary objects or things used or consumed by humans

Ï      select one idea and add to the basic shape of shoe (with one coloured pencil)

Ï      add to sketch but do not alter the basic shape of shoe

Ï      make sure students engage in conversation with peers in order to successfully achieve shoe transformation

Ï      students select appropriate colours and add to design carefully

Ï      discuss various techniques and ways of using pencil crayons

 

Lesson 3:  Shoe Construction

 

 materials

 sketch of modified shoe

 used shoe

 newspaper, cardboard (if needed)

 masking tape 

 

Ï      role model for students

Ï      students are to refer to shoe design

Ï      students are make additions to shoe by manipulating newspaper and fastening with tape

Ï      keep repeating process until desired shape is achieved (remind students not to use an excess of tape)

Ï      students are to squeeze the newspaper and tape tightly in order to have a firm shape

Ï      students are to make sure shape is taped onto shoe and fastened well without falling apart

Ï      continue with this procedure until students has achieved his/her goal

 

 

 

Lesson 4:  Adding a Base Coat of Acrylic Paint onto Shoe

 

materials

colour wheel

wide flat bristle brushes

various colours of acrylic paint

palettes, water containers, paper towels, newspaper

 

Ï      review the colour wheel (primary, secondary, etc.)

Ï      review the rules on how to use paints and clean up responsibilities

Ï      role model to students on how to mix and achieve desired colours

Ï      role model on how to apply paint onto shoe covering the surface(inside and out) without missing any areas

Ï      let the shoe dry before adding details

 

 

Lesson 5:  Adding Details onto Shoe

 

materials

various sizes of bristle brushes

various colours of acrylic paint

palettes, water containers, paper towels, newspaper

decorative elements

glue gun

 

Ï      role model on how to apply details onto shoe using various colours and sizes of brushes

Ï      remember colours need to complement shoe transformation

Ï      once painting process is complete and if necessary, students may glue decorative materials to complement shoe design
