I learned my craft playing in the eclectic San Francisco music scene of the '60's and was soon playing Bass with such greats of the Oakland Blues as "Guitar" Curtis Anderson, Haskell "Cool Papa" Sadler and Sonny Rhodes. By '73, I was the Bassist with Mississippi Johnny Waters in the house band at the legendary Eli's Mile High Club in Oakland, where I accompanied such artists as Charles Brown, Luther Tucker and Sugar Pie DeSanto. In 1977, I toured playing Bass with Texas Blues Guitar Legend, Albert Collins. From 1978-'80, I played Guitar and Bass with Big Walter Horton, the greatest living Harmonica Player of that era (Who began his career with Ma Rainey and the Memphis Jug Band), who also mentored my own Harmonica playing. We were frequently joined onstage by Walter's protege', Charlie Musselwhite.
In 1980, I began performing daily, in Senior Care Facilities, playing the music of the '20's and '30's on Guitar, Harmonica, Ukulele and Accordion, which I continue to do on a full-time basis, to this day. In 1981, I played Cajun Music with Zydeco's Grammy Award winner, Queen Ida and with Danny Poullard's Louisiana Playboys. During 1982, I played with Bluegrass and Country Music's most influential female pioneer, the great, Rose Maddox. Throughout the '80's, I played Bass with the popular Country/Western Swing/Rockabilly band, Red Dust (Who have recently re-formed and I'm playing with again). In 1989 I played Bass with West Coast Harmonica Ace, Mark Hummel. In 1990, I was one of the founding members of the popular Jump Blues/Swing Revival band, Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers. At the time, the band focused on the repertoire of the Classic Blues Singers of the '20's. During the four years I was the band's Bass Player, we won the SF Weekly's Wammie Award and recorded an album for Kaleidoscope Records and did shows for Bill Graham with Clarence Clemmons, Robert Cray, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Roy Rogers. Durning this time, I also played Bass with Blues Legend, John Lee Hooker and Jazz Trumpet Great, Don Cherry. From '94-2002, I was the Bass Player in the Lost River Band, the house band at the West Coast's Country Music shrine, DeMarco's 23 club in Brisbane. During that time, I was also the original Bass Player in the pioneering Western Swing/Jazz ensemble, Jim Campilongo and the Ten Gallon Cats. In 2000, I was one of the founding members of the Tarantulas Jug Band, singing and playing Harmonica, Guitar and Musical Saw. From 2002-2005 I played Bass with the Jazz/New Orleans Funk band, The Brothers Goldman. Since 2006, I have played Bass with the '20's-''30's style Hot Hawaiian band, the Faux Hawaiians Since 2006, I have also played Bass with the Michael Foley Trio, playing Swing Standards of the '40's. I currently play Harmonica and Guitar in the Amazing Grapes Jug Band. I play Bass and sing in, the best little band in the world, Tall, Dark and Handsome |
