STOP THIS WAR! Bush and Blair have responded to the devastating attack of 11th September by declaring ‘war on terrorism’. They know this is a war they cannot win. Instead they have waged war against Afghanistan and its impoverished people. The Afghan people have suffered 20 years of war, major cities like Kabul, where basic needs are barely met, are now being reduced to rubble. Innocent people should not pay the price for America’s feeling of loss.
THIS IS IMPERIALIST WAR! Tony Blair has arrogantly promised this ‘war on terrorism’ will solve the problems faced by the people of the Middle East and Asia. It has been claimed that this war is in the defence of democracy, but for who? Ironically, one of the first things NATO did was to shore up Musharraf’s military dictatorship in Pakistan with the promise of financial aid. History shows us, Western interference in foreign affairs leads to heightened tensions, misery and more war. America and the CIA backed Osama bin Laden in the war against the USSR in Afghanistan. Paving the way for the Taliban, now they back the reactionary Northern Alliance. The British and American governments have no solutions for Afghanistan or the Middle East. Their war means more death and destruction and will cause further destabilisation of the region.
AID RELIEF IS HYPOCRITICAL PROPAGANDA! The people of Afghanistan were already facing a humanitarian disaster. It is estimated that some 7 million faced starvation before this war began. Now the bombing has started our governments are trying to salve our consciences by telling us that they are providing famine relief as the bombs drop! We should not believe that Western governments have suddenly become concerned for ordinary Afghanis.
HYPOCRISY ON TERRORISM! Western Governments have a hypocritical attitude toward terrorism. The American government have supported terror groups when it has coincided with their agenda. Not only have they supported groups like the Contras who tried to overthrow the socialist system in Nicaragua but they support reactionary and murderous regimes too. They supported Pinochet in Chile, despite knowing about his death squads who attempted to eradicate political opposition. In the Middle East they supported Saddam Hussein when his regime suited their agenda. They sold him arms in the war against Iran, and provided ‘intelligence’ so he could eradicate political opposition at home.
THIS IS A RACIST WAR! Asylum seekers, many from Afghanistan, have been treated with utter contempt by this Labour Government. This war, no matter how Blair tries to dress it otherwise, scapegoats ordinary Afghanis and Muslims. Ordinary Afghanis, Muslims, asylum seekers, and ethnic minorities are not to blame for the terror attack on America! American senators are already talking about repatriation of Afghanis as soon as they have won this war. We oppose all deportations, racist laws and race attacks!
The Truth Is The First Victim Of War! While untold numbers of Afghanis die in the Bombing raids over Afghanistan the British media becomes less questioning of the War Coalition’s motives by the day. The British media prefer to talk up what they unquestioningly see as a valid war. Not content with this, they are whipping up hysteria about Anthrax and biological warfare. We condemn the the biased reporting in the British media and their attempts to scare us into supporting this war.
DEFEND CIVIL LIBERTIES! Blunkett proposed the introduction of identity cards in reaction to the events of September 11. ID cards represent a return to the racist SUSS laws of the 1980s. Bush declared that if we don’t support the war, we support terror. This is an attack on our right of freespeech. Blunkett says we have nothing to fear from new Europe wide anti-terrorist laws. However, under the guise of preventing ‘inflammatory’ remarks, they are instigating laws designed to curb our criticism of religion. There are already laws in place to prevent blasphemy, we need less laws like this not more!
