Westminster
February 9 & 10, 2004
My parents and I are loading
up the van for the longest road trip,
to the biggest dog show, of my handling career, so far!! We,
of course, are headed towards the
“BigApple”, New York City, more specifically, Madison Square Garden, for
the 128th annual
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. I have qualified to show in
Junior Showmanship
by winning the required 8 wins in the very competitive Open Senior
class.
I was awarded my first win of 2003, on May 17th,
at the Greater Kingsport
Kennel Club Show. This was just the second time showing
Ch. MyShadow’s Smoke-N-Mirrors CD, lovingly known as “Tyler”, as my Jr. partner.
This wonderfully energetic English Spring Spaniel is owned by my good
friend and traveling companion, Fran Nemet. Tyler and I went on to
win another 3 first’s, including 2 Best Junior titles.
Another very memorable win in 2003 was at the Asheville
Kennel Club Show on
June 14th. This, also, turned into a Best Junior award.
Here, for the first time ever,
I was presenting “Micky”, Ch. Blue Monday’s Midnight Sun, a handsome, well
built,
flashy, brindle Boxer. Many thanks to Cliff and Kim Hall for
the privilege of co-owning
Micky, and now for allowing him to compete with me at the garden!
The following weekend at the Clemson Kennel Club
Show, Shiloh Rocket Man,
“Tracer”, a sleek, elegant, showy Doberman and I took home another
Best Junior
trophy! I greatly appreciate the trust and respect from owner-breeder-handler,
Sandy Tomes for every chance I get to show this exceptional dog!
My last 2 wins needed to qualify for Westminster,
came from my very own
Dreamer, EWO’s Dream Breaker, my best friend, my classic fawn Boxer.
Even though
these wins were at relatively small shows, Augusta and Hilton Head
Island,
my boy, Dreamy came through for me when I needed him the most, Best Junior
both times!!
Which leads me to my greatest accomplishment with Dreamer so far, winning
Best of Breed over 3 specials at the Asheville Kennel Club show in
June.
These were Dreamer’s first 2 points.
It is such a wonderful feeling to be able to say Dreamer is now “pointed”,
and by his owner, Jr. Hander, me!
Other noteworthy wins this year were with several
dogs belonging to friends,
as well as fellow Spartanburg Kennel Club members. One,
I finished, for my friend,
Loreen Wunderlich, Siberian Husky, Ch. Ashta’s First Edition, with
a 3 point major
going WB/BOW/BOS,
over a bitch special at Columbia Kennel Club show in April.
Another two wins, that were extra special, were finishing one
of my biggest supporters,
Chuck Keller's, Chinese Crested, Ch. Expressions Tuff Enough
Nava, "Tuffie",
not once, but twice. Both were 3 point majors
at the Douglasville Kennel Club
and Classic City Kennel Club.
And now, a new member of my Juniors team, Moorcroft Nava Sir Tristan,
"Mikey",
who is also owned by good friend, Chuck Keller.
Mikey has 5 points to date, two of which are to my credit.
Watch carefully for this eye catching Dalmation and me in 2004.
The last memorable win for the year was while helping out my special friend,
Gail Long.
I presented "Sting", Ch.Wynmoor’s Fields of Gold for the first
time.
This English Springer Spaniel is owned by Allison Smith and
Erin Kerfoot.
"Sting" went BOB at both the
Piedmont and Columbia Kennel Club shows in September.
Again I would like to thank my never ending support
team, including,
but not limited to my breed supporters,
as well as, the dedicated members of the Spartanburg Kennel Club.
And, I owe so much to my Boxer mentor, Peggy Otto!!
Who reminds me when I have a problem or just want to talk:
"If it's not 2am then it's not too late to call!"
And this goes without saying, but I will,
All my love, always,
to my parents, Wally and Evelyn McCartney.
