It is said that The Emperor Yao won his title here about 2100 years ago. During the period of from 18th century to 19th century, about 100 hundred year ago, Ping Yao had been the financial center and there had been so many draft banks (Piaohao) located here and so many other companies had run their business in this city. Then it had been named as ¡§small Beijing¡¨. Now everything has gone with history and all the glorious past is just like a dream. Those famous successful businessmen have already passed away. But the ancient city wall, streets, shops, temples and monasteries¡]¨k¤lªº×¹D°|;¹¬°|¡^ have still reminded their original style. It is a complete painting showing the unique development of its culture, society, economy and religion to nationally during the Ming-Qing Dynasties. Everyone who has visited Ping yao can say that the world heritage¡]¿ò²£; Ä~©Óª«; ¶Ç²Î¡^. The former name of Ping yao is Pingtao but later the name has been changed into Ping yao because of the taboo ¡]¸T§Òªº¨Æª«(©Î¦æ¬°);¸T§Ò»y¡^for the name of the Emperor Taiwu. Since Pingtao is located at an important place to resist the aggression from the northern border, it is very necessary to build a city wall for the resistance. It is said the King Zhouxuan dispatched ¡]¬£»º;µo°e;§Ö»¼¡^a general to fight against the invaders at the northern border and the troop¡]x¶¤,³¡¶¤¡^was stationed in Ping yao during 827B.C. to 782 B.C They built an earth city wall but it was very low and narrow and it couldn¡¦t resist the invasion in Ping yao who had been suffered a lot from the war built up a magnificent city wall on its basis of the earth wall in 1370 of Ming Dynasty. This magnificent city wall looks as a natural moat¡]Å@«°ªe,À¢·¾¡^and there the tiger and leopard standing on the mountain. The city wall now we see is mostly built up in Ming Dynasty with a total length of 6200 meters, 6-10 meters high and 3-6 meters wide on its top. There is a tower on each of the sit city gates, a corner towers has a poetic name indicating that the harmony between the people and nature. There is a booth tower every 40-60 meters ways on the city wall. The total number of crenels is 3000 and the number of booth tower is 72 symbolizing the same amount of students and persons of virtue¡]ÀuÂI,ªø³B, ¬ü¼w,¼w¦æ¡^of Confucius. This military construction of city wall has a deep connotation showing that the people are looking forward to the benevolent government. Merchants from the Shanxi Province once controlled the financial market of China and those from Ping Yao occupied about half of the total financial market. The first banking company which has been honored as ¡¥the founder in the countryside for banking system in China¡¦-Rischengchang, was born in this small town of Ping Yao. At that time, there were 51 draft banks in the whole country, among which 43 were in The Shanxi Province. But there were 22 in Ping yao, and the Ming-Qing Street in Ping Yao was called as ¡¥The Wall Street of Asia in the 19th century¡¦. The richest businessmen in Ping Yao were opening their headquarters in this street and spread their branch offices to every part of the world. Since the prosperity of in Ping yao, there were many houses with beautiful decoration and surrounded by the high wall, and also the residential houses of local people with its special style. Those houses both for the rich people and the ordinary people are linking together and nestling¡]è¹å¥XªºÂú³¾¡^ in the city walls and they also look like sleeping in the safe port of history. If you look the whole scenery within the city from the top of the city wall, you can see that the green brick and gray tile¡]¥Ë;²¡¿j;Àð¿j;¦a¿j¡^of the houses are showing its long history as well as life of the local people. As an outstanding example of Han nationality in China of Ming-Qing Dynasties, the ancient city of Ping Yao deserves the honor undoubtedly. The whole structure of the city completely conform with¡]²Å¦X,¬Û¤@P¡^ traditional feudal¡]«Øªº;«Ê«Ø®É¥Nªº¡^system: the whole city is square and upright, the streets are crossing each other horizontally and vertically, the major streets and the small streets are distributed in a good order showing what is primary from what is secondary. The city tower situates in the center of the whole city and the street it is located is a straight axis line to the north and south of the city. The buildings in the city are divided into two parts: the Tower God Temple in the left and the local government office of the feudal society in the right, the Temple to Confucius in the left and the Temple to Guanyu in the right, Qingxu Temple of Taoism in the left and Jifu Temple of Buddhism in the right.
