How to install a short throw shifter Time: With a pneumatic/hydrolic lift system: 30-60 minutes With a jack and jack stands: 3-4 hours You will need: The short throw shifter & mounting pieces Ratchet set Screw drivers Pliers/Needle nose Open ended wrench Smallish hands/arms A jack and jackstands Possibly a crowbar and small hammer First find the place below the car where the shifter is within the car. So that you can access the bottom of the assembly. More than likely the exhaust/catalytic converter will be in the way, as well as a large heat shield. If heat shields are in the way, remove the screws keeping those in place, slide the heat shield back or around the pipe so that they are out of the way. If the exhaust is too close to the floor pan remove the hangers it rests on (sometimes these are rubber hangers). Find the bottom of the shifter assembly, Remove the bolt-pin and nut from the control rod. Remove the spring. Loosen the screws to the mounting bracket. Remove the shift knob and boot, and if possible lift the dust boot out of the way from the inside of the vehicle cabin. Get the new shifter and assembly ready, don't assemble in the wrong order. Generally the mounting bracket needs to be attached from within the cabin of the vehicle while the new shifter is in place. Check to make sure you're not leaving anything out before reinserting the bolt-pin into the new shifter. Now there will be round inserts and washers to be placed on and around the bolt-pin, so be careful not to drop these while inserting the bolt-pin. Once done, re-attach the nut to the pin and then the spring to it's former hole. Test to see if the shifter goes into each gear properly. If not make sure everything was put where it was supposed to be. Re-attach the dust boot, shift boot, and new or old shift knob. Replace the exhaust hangers and heatshields so that everything is back together properly. Test drive, make sure everything is in order. Shift throws will be significantly shorter.
