Moulin Rouge - Opening Section 1
Quote: Can Can suddenly stops, silence,
low note played, "Paris, 1900", art nouveau border and decoration,
lines on screen, strange, low creaking sound, character on top of windmill
sings: "There was a boy.." all within a frame, but arm of windmill
breaking frame.
Explain: sound effects: silence and low note provides a stark contrast
with previous liveliness. It is Baz Lurhmann establishing "a comic,
tragic cinematic language". Whole film goes from comedy to tragedy
to heighten the tragedy by contrast. In the same way, the music (elsewhere)
goes from crescendo to crescendo to crescendo, heightening the experience.
