Weekly Rule Changes
by M.L. Morgan
Well, race fans - Nascar/King William II is back to their old tricks. The spoiler rule for Atlanta will be changed to give the GM teams a break. Give ME a break !
The race at Las Vegas was a travesty but I dislike the knee-jerk reaction by Nascar. Weve run only 2 races with the 5 & 5' rule . Chevy and Ford have each won a race. Wheres the big controversy ? Parity doesnt mean any of the 43 competitors have an equal chance to win on any given race . Thats absurd. There are a few teams which are just much better than the others. As much as Nascar might like to, they cant legislate true parity.
After the race Richard Childress was beside himself, demanding rules help from Nascar. I have a lot of sympathy for that team. All theyve done in 3 races is win the Daytona 500 and maintain 2nd place in the points standings. I can think of about 35 other teams who would like to be suffering as they are.
I will neither deny nor ignore the dominance of the Fords in the past 2 races. The race results speak for themselves. The Ford teams are dealing with a new body-style and newly-implemented 5 & 5" rules. Maybe they did their homework better than some of the GM teams. Whatever the reason, the last thing we need is for Nascar to intercede with more rule changes.
Im as much in favor of a level playing field as any other race fan but Im fed up with Nascars incessant rule changes. The GM teams have the ability to catch up. These people arent morons. The GM teams have won a lot of races. Not by chance and certainly not by weekly rule changes. These are big boys - all grown-up. Let em race for the money.
The arrogance of Nascar appals me the most. The new race-version Taurus has been tested since last September. Nascar HAD to be aware of the aerodynamic superiority of the Taurus long before they implemented their new 5 & 5" rules. To announce a drastic rule change during Speed Weeks is a real crock.
Nascar tries very hard to mandate equality and most race fans want to see it, but its not going to happen until Nascar goes the IROC route - 43 identically prepared cars chosen at random. Thats not racing. Thats a bunch of crap. Quote me.
Our dear friends at A Lighter Side of Nascar are restoring their great site. Some no-brain punk had been sending some really ugly e-mail. Obviously not a race fan. Just another fool with access to a computer. Glad to have you back Lighter Side! You do a fine job.
