Title

SYMBOLES DE PARIS & FRANCE

Background

You have been hired as a consultant to Disney to redesign the Paris/France EPCOT exhibit to better represent France for world tourists.

Goal

You will design a proposal that includes a description of the monuments to be highlighted, including their historical and cultural significance as well as physical features. The site must also have some offerings for family entertainment for rainy days or evenings. To create the feel of "being in France," the Disney Board is requiring that the layout and presentation include signage, titles and captions in French.

Purpose

To demonstrate knowledge of the diverse historic and modern offerings of Paris

To demonstrate an understanding of differences between French and American city life and lifestyles

To use PowerPoint or desktop publishing to present a proposal

To use aller and adjectives in French to describe places one can go

Audience

The Disney/EPCOT Development Board Executives

Procedure

  1. Choose a partner
  2. You must include a bibliography of sources, including credits for each illustration included! Please collect this information in a Word document as you work. Use MLA format for documenting sources.
  3. Research current EPCOT offerings in the France pavilion.
  4. Research information regarding a minimum of 5 historical monuments/ places from Paris and surrounding areas
  5. Research information regarding a minimum of 3 different museums. You may want to highlight particular exhibits or parts of a museum…
  6. Research information regarding places for entertainment typical of Paris and French cities (suitable for teens and families)
  7. Research information regarding types of food to eat … include examples of restaurants and cafés, including some menus to be offered/ available in the France pavilion. REMEMBER, this should reflect la vie française, not American Fast-Food! You may create your own or borrow from real restaurants, provided you cite your sources accurately
  8. Using researched information, create a storyboard of at least 10 slides for your PowerPoint work. (If you wish to use a different program or format, please get approval from me first!)
  9. Collect images for visuals and save each one in your folder.
  10. Build (PowerPoint) Presentation
  11. Delete excess files (such as images) from your folder
  12. Create script for presentation to the Disney Board
  13. Present to "Disney Board" en français

Researching guidelines for Paris Project

Paris is a big city, and a favorite of tourists, so in order to help you design your proposal, you want to consult reliable sources…. and organize the information you research…

Remember that good research means consulting a variety of resources… I will require that you use at least two (2) books/magazine articles and three (3) different internet sites to collect your information.

Because you will need images, and you will use many different sources with similar information, you are to cut and paste information from the web into a word document and save it in your own file on the network…

As you must cite your sources, you should be saving bibliography information as you go along… It is a good idea to create a "sources" document and cut and paste hyperlinks into it. Please use MLA style. Style guides are available in the LMC and online. I personally like to use these sites to check my own citations:

Harnack, Andrew Kleppinger, Eugene Online! A reference guide to using online sources ."Using MLA to cite and document sources". Bedford/St. Martins 2003. 3 April 2004. <http://www.bedfordstmartins.com/online/cite5.html>

Lawton, Kelley A. and Cousineau, Laura. Guide to Library Research "Part 7: Citing Sources and Avoiding Plagiarism: Documentation Guidelines". 06-Nov-2003. Duke Libraries. 3 April 2004. <http://www.lib.duke.edu/libguide/citing.htm>

"Noodle Bib Starter" August 2003. Noodle Tools, Inc. 3 April 2004. <http://www.noodletools.com/noodlebib/index.php>

To cut and paste text from sites:

  1. Open a new Word document
  2. In Internet Explorer, highlight the information and choose "Copy" (shortcut is Ctrl-c)
  3. Place cursor in Word and choose "Paste" (shortcut is Ctrl-v)
  4. go back to site and highlight address bar, copy address and paste into Word document to track resources for the Bibliography… be sure to include the date you accessed the page as well!
  5. Be sure to save your document in your student folder on the S: drive by choosing "Save As" and your folder in the S:drive!! That means choose your student login name by double-clicking before you Save!! If you need help, ask someone…..

To cut and paste graphics from sites:

  1. Right click image
  2. "Save As"
  3. choose a folder and create a name to save in your folder…
  4. Keep track of copied images in your bibliography (the word document!)

One way to organize your notes in Word is to create a table to copy and paste your information…. You should also use this to help take notes from print resources… Not all columns will apply to all places you choose!

Monument/Place & general location in Paris

5 historical monuments/ places

3 different museums

Historical importance, dates, famous people connected to monument (3-5 facts)

Other Interesting trivia

Reason this place will appeal to American teens
