| AP Summer Work | ||||||||||||||||||
| While the summer is short, it is important that you maintain some contact with oral and written French during the summer. During the year, you will be immersed into communication while sharpening your listening, speaking, writing and reading skills. The goals of this course (as outlined by the College Board) are: to develop the ability to understand spoken French in various contexts; to develop a French vocabulary sufficient for reading newspaper and magazine articles, literary texts, and other non-technical writings without dependence on a dictionary; and to develop the ability to express oneself in French, both orally and in writing, coherently, resourcefully and with reasonable fluency and accuracy. Does that sound ambitious? By May, you wont think so: you will be able to fly through the work! Even if you have not chosen to take this class as an AP course, the goal is for you to communicate comfortably in a variety of situations! Well talk about it more en septembre! In the meantime In order to make you think, eat and sleep French (what else is there to do?) but still allow you to enjoy the summer , your summer homework is as follows: |

| 2. LACTUALIT & LA LECTURE Part of really mastering language comes from reading. This allows you to put your language in action. Choose a short article each week, (from the internet or from a newspaper or magazine The important thing is to use what is easily accessible to you. You may borrow magazines from me: contact me at [email protected] during the summer! To keep the vocabulary within your comfort zone, I recommend you choose articles on topics that interest you: each of you have very different interests. Perhaps choose a theme (Movies, Famous People, Sports Events, The Tour de France, the French Open, Music: whatever your passion is!) and focus on finding similar articles. You will be reading these articles in order to guide us through them in the first weeks of class. You will be the teacher and expert! -->read 1 article per week for July & August = 8 articles total. Your article needs to be at least 300 words.. if you choose short articles, do 2 a week! -->Please keep track of what you read, using full MLA or APA style citations (so that I could find it again if necessary) (in your journal) -->Record the headline in your journal, and then write a 1 paragraph summary of the article. -->Make a vocab lesson of key words needed to understand the article. -->Make up 2 or 3 quiz questions (vrai/faux or multiple choice is fine) that would test a readers basic comprehension. |

| Go get a notebook or journal that you can use for just this class for writing lists of vocab and journal type entries. In September, you will have several vocab quizzes based on your personal lists and our collective additions to them! | ||||||||||||||||||
| 1. LE CINMA: -->Watch 2 movies in French While you are watching, pay attention to the translations. Not all movies are translated or subtitled with an accurate sense of idiomatic expression. -->Collect a minimum of 10 quotes or phrases from each movie, and transcribe (as best you can) both the English and the French. You should have a total of 25 quotes/citations -->Write a brief commentary en francais on the quality of the translation for each movie. This should be about page for each movie. |
