Meets all advanced requirements and:
Essay reveals sophisticated and original thinking.
Sophisticated synthesis of historical perspectives.
Counterargument and refutation is embedded throughout paper.
More effective control of language.
Essay is virtually error-free.
Advanced
Meets all proficient requirements and:
Essay is more unified and cohesive.
Essay reveals original thinking.
Effective control of language and has minimal errors.
 Proficient
The essay is at least five paragraphs (introduction, conclusion, and THREE
     two-chunk body paragraphs), typed, and in MLA format.
The essay demonstrates an understanding of the purpose, speaker, and audience. 
Essay has an engaging introduction. 
Essay has a clear thesis.
The thesis is well-supported via logical analysis. 
Evidence should be relevant to the thesis.
Evidence comes from five (or more) reliable sources.
Essay includes at least one counterargument.
Essay refutes at least one counterargument.
Errors in grammar, diction, paragraph structure, sentence structure, and usage
     do not interfere with understanding.
Errors in spelling, punctuation, or capitalization do not interfere with meaning.
Correct MLA in-text citations throughout essay.
Works Cited contains correctly formatted MLA documentation.
