Krystal’s Case 

    Krystal is a seventeen-year-old junior with a language processing based learning disability.  She has limited vocabulary (sixth grade level) and has trouble responding to direct questions.  Krystal’s writing skills are low.  She is higher in her math abilities (eighth grade).  Since Krystal has a communication barrier, she is shy and withdrawn around new people in new situations.  Krystal is involved in school to work program.  She lives at home in a very supportive environment with her mother and younger sister.  She spends a lot of time with her younger sister and enjoys helping her sister with homework.  She loves working with money and computers and would like to continue education after high school.

 

Description of Student’s Future Vision:

 Krystal hopes to attend the local community college in the future.  She loves working with money and computers.  She expresses a desire to work in the field of banking.

Employment Goal: Krystal will continue to work three days each week through the school to work program at Financial King Bank.  She will learn customer service/relation skills in order to interact with customers. 

Level of present performance: Krystal gets nervous when working with people that she does not know.  This makes it difficult for her to communicate well with others. 

Steps needed to accomplish goal:

1. Work with ESE teacher on conversation skills. 

2. Discuss with Krystal important social manners that are appropriate for her position. 

3. Have Krystal interact with others (customers) at the bank through the school to work program.

Vocational Education/Training Goal: Krystal will work at the bank double counting cash drawers and filing papers with emphasis on data entry skills. 

Level of present performance: Krystal is fairly good at math and is a very organized student. 

Steps need to accomplish goal: 

1. Provide opportunities that involve counting money and making change. 

2. Do activities that emphasize categorizing items. 

3. Meet bank manager and Ms. Coins to discuss expectations and responsibilities. 

4. Provide opportunities to enter data into a database.  (Possibly through TBTI- refer to adult services.)

Postsecondary Education Goal: Krystal wants to study accounting or finance in college.  She will take the SAT and look at some secondary school options. 

Level of present performance: Krystal is enrolled in a special education learning strategies course for one period a day.  The rest of her classes are in regular education. 

Steps needed to accomplish goal: 

1. Provide opportunities to practice test taking strategies in ESE class. 

2. Take practice SAT tests. 

3. Sign up for the SAT. 

4. Visit colleges in her area.

Future Financial/Income Needs Goal: Krystal will co-open a savings account to familiarize herself with financial responsibility and set a goal to save earned money for future. (College) 

Level of present performance: Krystal earns some money from babysitting for neighbors and family members, but spends it carelessly. 

Steps needed to accomplish goal: 

1. Have mother co-open an account with Krystal. 

2. Have Krystal deposit 80% of earned money into savings account on a weekly basis. 

3. Have learning strategies teacher help Krystal to discriminate between current wants and future needs.

Independent Living Goal: Krystal will be able to handle a household food budget. 

Level of present performance: Krystal lives with her mother and younger sister. Through PCP it was found that she has independent living skills such as cooking, shopping, and cleaning. She still needs to learn about financial responsibilities.  Krystal would like to live in an apartment in the future, after high school/college. 

Steps needed to accomplish goal: 

1. Plan weekly food menu. 

2. Write grocery list. 

3. Make a weekly food budget for the household. 

4.   Record money spent for food in family checkbook.

Transportation/Mobility Goal: Krystal will learn how to use public transportation. (bus) 

Level of present performance: Krystal is very “street smart” however she will need to use public transportation as her main means of transportation after high school and has difficulty remembering and asking for directions. 

Steps needed to accomplish goal: 

1. Have learning strategies teacher review bus system with Krystal. 

2. Develop strategies for remembering directions. 

3. Take bus to Tai-Chi class.

Social Relationship Goal: Krystal will participate in a math tutoring group after school.  The group tutors younger elementary students in elementary math concepts. 

Level of present performance: Krystal is very shy and nervous in new situations. This makes it difficult for Krystal to make friends. Krystal is very confident in her math ability and likes tutoring her younger sister with her math homework. 

Steps needed to accomplish goal: 

1. Meet with teacher/advisor of the tutoring group. 

2. Attend the math tutoring group meeting. 

3. Tutor elementary school students in math once a week and attend group meetings held once a month.

 Recreation/Leisure Goal: Krystal will join the local sport/fitness facility and Tai-Chi classes. 

Level of present performance: Krystal likes to work alone and prefers to work on the computer during her leisure time.  Krystal likes action films and is interested in learning about the art of Tai-Chi. 

Steps needed to accomplish goal: 

1. Use resources to learn about Tai-Chi. 

2. Visit local sport and fitness facilities. 

3. Attend a class.

Health and Safety Goal: Krystal needs to spend more time in physical activity. Krystal will participate in the Tai-Chi program.
