Level 1 Career Assessment for Students With
Disabilities: A Manual This manual guides the reader through a step-by-step process of a career assessment for students with disabilities. It is easily readable, and includes suggestions for modifications for the assessments. The manual also gives suggestions to the teacher on how to use, and file the assessments in the student’s file. Any education professional or parent could use this manual. Level One Career Assessment described in the manual is used to determine the best career route for a student with disabilities. The assessment is started at age twelve and involves the student, parent, and professionals involved in the students life. The career assessment is a two year process including: Ø
Student Interview, which is used to learn about other factors or resources in the
student’s life that could be used to make successful career choices. Ø
Parent Questionnaire, which gives the parent involvement in their
child’s future choices and enables the school to have useful information on
the child’s home and community activities. Ø
Staff Report is a checklist implemented by two educational staff members per year.
The information gathered is used to learn about specific skills of the student,
find out how a student functions in a particular environment, and review work
skills in a variety of conditions. Ø
Career Interest Information is assessed through interest inventories. The
results of these inventories are used to broaden a student’s choices, not to
limited options. These tested find how many career choices the student has, then
works to broaden these choices. Ø
Social Skills Review concludes if the student exhibits appropriate social
behavior. If a student is found to exhibit inappropriate behavior their
individualized education plan is modified to work on social skills. Ø
Annual Summary Sheet is used to summarize all the career assessments of
the school year. It is also used to project a three-year outcome concerning the
student’s status and to assist the transition services at age fourteen. Special
education teachers or parents preparing for their child’s transition services
can use the Level 1 Career Assessment. This program can be used as a whole, or
in sections. The student interview would be beneficial in finding the talents
and interests of a student with disabilities, and this is only on section. The
program would make the transition outcome for the student more successful
because of the information gained through the program. The
