CELLS

We've been learning about plant and animal cells this year. 5th grade students are required to:

  • Explain that living things are made of cells that carry out all life processes.
  • Explain that new cells come from existing cells, all of which are too small to see with the unaided eye.
  • Compare and contrast plant and animal cells.
  • Draw, label, and describe the structure and function of the essential parts of animal and plant cells (animal cells include nucleus, cell membrane, vacuole, and cytoplasm; plants cells include nucleus, cell wall, cell membrane, vacuole, cytoplasm, and chloroplasts).
  • Design and construct a model of a plant cell and animal cell.
  • Design an investigation to make observations of cells.

    PART FUNCTION
Cell Wall Made of a tough substance called cellulose, which supports the cell.
Cell Membrane Controls what substances can get into and out of the cell.
Nucleus Controls what happens inside the cell.
Chloroplasts Where photosynthesis happens chloroplasts contain a green substance called chlorophyll.
    Vacuole Provides storage of waste.
Cytoplasm Jelly-like substance, where chemical reactions happen. In plant cells there's a thin lining, whereas in animal cells most of the cell is cytoplasm.
