what is mld
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised therapy which is designed to improve the functioning of the lymphatic system. This is primarily achieved through the gentle rhythmical circling movements of the skin which stimulates the contraction of the lymphatic vessels. As a result a greater amount of the metabolic waste products and excess fluids are being removed from the body's tissues and enter the lymphatic system. The fluid is now know as lymph and passes through a series of lymph nodes (lymph glands) where it is cleansed of dead cells, bacteria and other waste products. The clean lymph is then returned to the blood stream.

A well functioning lymphatic system contributes to healthy body tissue and plays an important part in the body's immune responses.

the history
During the early 1930's the innovative Danish physical therapist Dr. Emil Vodder created a unique set of movements which he successfully used to clear chronic catarrh and facial acne.

After intensively studying what was then known about the lymphatic system he devised treatments for the whole body. He concluded that this technique which he termed manual Lymphatic Drainage could be applied to the almost any condition because of the important role that the lymphatic system plays in our bodies.

Since Vodder's pioneering work, modern research has supplied us with answers of how his method so effectively influences both the lymphatic and the nervous system. As a result MLD has spread worldwide and has become popular treatment in many European spas and hospitals and there is now a variety of schools which teach a form of the method.

'Lymph drainage is a healthy, natural, painless and absolutely effective method which gives a new basis to life, heath and beauty.' (Emil Vodder, 1937)

the benefits
MLD can be applied to many different conditions and is also excellent as a preventative measure that can enhance your general well being.

It has a calming effect on the automatic nervous system that leaves you deeply relaxed. It can help improve the quality of sleep, relieve constipation and generally aid digestion.

Some people experience an improved performance of their immune system as a result of regular MLD appointments.

MLD alleviates fluid congestion; swollen ankles, tired puffy eyes, swollen legs during pregnancy and fluid retention due to pre-menstrual syndrome.

Women with painful breasts have found relief through MLD treatments.

Chronic inflammatory conditions like sinusitis, arthritis, acne and rosacea can be improved with the application of MLD.

It promoted the healing of wounds and burns and can improve the appearance and texture of old scars.

The healing process of broken bones, torn ligaments and sprains can be accelerated, enhanced and pain can often be eased.

It has successfully been used to heal leg ulcers.

MLD is particularly beneficial in cases of post operative or traumatic bruising and swelling.

It is an effective component of the treatment and management of lymphoedema and is of special importance in cases of truncal oedema.

it also assists in conditions arising from venous insufficiency.

For children MLD is particularly beneficial where there have been frequent ear, nose and throat infections. It is also helpful with some skin conditions and with children who are overweight.

fiona brooke
I did my initial training in the Dr Vodder method of MLD in 1997 and completed the advanced training in 1999. I have since specialised in this form of treatment and have worked on many conditions including, primary and secondary lymphoedema. I am also a trained Naturopathic Nutritionist, so where appropriate can give information on diet and naturopathic techniques which can help the lymphatic system and support MLD treatments. I am also trained in Kineso Tapin, which has been found to be helpful with lymphoedema.
