In a series where the Baltimore offense simply never got anything going, Game 1 proved another stellar performance for Jake Riss. He scattered seven hits over nine innings while striking out ten, while the offense delivered six runs. Hal Jordan led the way with a home run and three RBI

As Sallee silenced Baltimore for seven innings, St. Louis built a 2-0
lead. Pinch hitter Steve Weiss singled
home Baltimore’s first run in the eighth, but Melvin James got the run back in
the bottom of the inning with a single of his own. Finally, against Giordano in the ninth, the Orange Caps loaded
the bases with nobody out for Rob Floyd, who promptly grounded into a 1-6-3
double play. A run scored, cutting the
lead to one, but after a walk to LaRocca, Sagmoen struck out to end the
game. Baltimore’s failure to find a big
hit proved a turning point in the series.

Santiago was simply amazing, allowing only two hits over nine innings, and only one of consequence—a solo shot to Rob Floyd in the bottom of the seventh. At the time, it cut St. Louis’ lead to 3-1 and kept Baltimore in the game, but the Red Birds quickly answered, as Melvin James hit a three-run blast to blow it open in the eighth.

Baltimore held its own against Boerner, taking a 2-1 lead on RBIs from Floyd and Sagmoen in the second. A Campbell home run tied it in the third, but Sagmoen gave Baltimore another lead in the fourth with an RBI single. Melvin James tied the game with an RBI in the top of the fifth, but Baltimore took the lead back on home runs by Mike Smith and Jason Merritt in the bottom of the inning. Finally, in the sixth, a Sean Campbell RBI single and a huge two-run triple by Luther Whitt put St. Louis ahead 6-5. Baltimore managed just one more base runner in their final four at bats against Daskin, Bosetti, and Giordano.
