In the battle of the “Lew’s,” Cleveland couldn’t have liked their chances, sending veteran junkballer Lew Wilson against the Claymores’ star Lew Burdette.  Yet the nearly two-run gap in ERA mattered not, as Wilson held Chicago to just a run on six hits over six and two-thirds.  A Ricky Bell RBI single broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth, and Cleveland added a pair in the eighth on home runs by Oris Prichard and Bill Sterns.  Chicago stranded eleven base runners.

In another well-pitched game, a huge error by Cleveland’s Steve McLarney cost Fleming a pair of runs in the fifth.  That gave Chicago a 2-1 lead, which they added to in the 7th and 8th on RBI singles from Viox and Gomez.  Viox allowed just five hits over eight innings before turning the game over to East.

With their backs to the wall, Cleveland got in trouble early, allowing runs in the first and second to give Chicago a 2-0 lead.  By the ninth, it was 4-1, and Cleveland had stranded eight base runners against Toots Wilson.  Yet what seemed to be an easy win for Chicago turned into a nightmare, as the Indians crushed the Claymores’ bullpen for six ninth inning runs.  East allowed all three men he faced to reach base, and then Allen Schlueter allowed two more, before giving up a one-out Buck Chandler single to tie the game.  Then a sac fly and two more singles—totaling six singles in the inning—brought home three more runs.  After the astonishing rally, Foxx came on to get the save and earn Cleveland a seventh game.

Chicago picked up three runs in the second, two of them on home runs by Gonzalez and Laudner.  Down 4-0, Cleveland picked up two in the sixth and another in the seventh to get within one, but Vince Martin delivered an insurance run for Chicago with a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth.  Chicago went back to Ken East, who this time allowed only one hit as he picked up the save, sending Chicago to its fifth DML World Series.
