| May 12, 2007: Franchise Hockey rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period, but lost in a shootout without starting goaltender Mikey Stanzler and head coach David King. Down two goals, Matt King opened the third period of his team's 6-5 shootout loss to Sobrato with his second goal of the game right off the faceoff. With seven minutes remaining, Cam Rowland took a pass from his brother Myles while sneaking in from the point. The Sobrato netminder failed to smother Rowland's wristshot, and the freshman defenseman poked in the rebound. In the shootout, Josh Capelle led off with a five-hole goal. After Sobrato scored on its first shot, Kris Anderson's backhand went high. After Sobrato scored its second goal, King lost the puck and failed to get a shot off which ended the shootout. The Franchise trailed the entire night. With rookie Chris King in net for his second career game, the team had trouble gaining momentum. King yielded five goals in regulation on 12 shots. Matt King opened the Franchise scoring, converting on a head-man feed from Ray Cleverly. After King took an interference penalty, Myles Rowland scored the Franchise's first short-handed goal in Rollin' Ice history on a breakway. Capelle netted a beautiful two-on-one goal in the second period which cut the Sobrato lead to 4-3. However, a shot from the high slot eluded Chris King and set up the third period comeback. The team suffered, especially, with Matt King in penalty trouble all game long and Sheraj Ragoobeer unavailable until the third period. With Stanzler and coach David King back for next week's game against Sobrato, the team will have to lick its wounds quickly. Box Score: 1st Period: M. King 11 (Cleverly, C. Rowland) M. Rowland 6 (Anderson) 2nd Period: Capelle 4 (King, C. Rowland) 3rd Period: M. King 12 C. Rowland 1 (M. Rowland, King) Goaltending: C. King 1-1 (5 GA) Captain's Thoughts: If you ask me any other day, I'll tell you that I like the shootout because it's exciting and conclusive in determining a winner and a loser. Today? The shootout's probably the worst idea ever. Not having Mikey left us painfully exposed on defense. The fact is that we dominated puck possession for most of the game. We had tons of scoring chances, offense which we generated minus Sheraj for most of the evening. Positives? Josh continues to prove himself as a formidable offensive threat. And I can tell you from my experience as his linemate, he starts rushes and generates offense from backchecking and really controlling the puck well in his own zone. Ray was excellent in his time as a forward. And who knew Myles was such a natural defenseman? The negatives? Well, the fact that Sobrato failed to score a single legitimate goal was frustrating. But the only real negative leads to another positive- our resiliency. We lost the momentum time and time again, and we just put our heads down and answered the bell. We dominated overtime, and it painfully obvious that we were playing against the clock rather than against Sobrato. Sobrato knows who we are. Just wait 'til they meet Mikey Stanzler.- Your Captain #37 |
