| August 18, 2006: Playing with news of major changes on the herizon in the minds of the players, Franchise Hockey played one of its most inspired games of the year. Not reflected by the score, the Franchise battled the Mustangs but lost 13-1. Prior to the last game of the true summer (meaning school-free), the Franchise learned that veteran defenseman Kit McCavitt and forward John Peters would be retiring. The news certainly was a surprise to the team, but the Franchise did not shy away from the challenge. To his credit, Peters picked up an assist on the Franchise's only goal of the game in his farewell stint. He was able to find Matt King in front of the net for King's tenth goal on the season. King's goal completed an improbable comeback after he was writhing in pain on the ground from being hit by a slapshot. King, Sheraj Ragoobeer and Robby Merk were forced to log major minutes with a limited bench. Last second problems forced goaltender David McGrouther and forwards Dara Rahimzadeh and Daniel Lees out of the lineup. McGrouther and Rahimzadeh took ill, while Lees missed the game because of personal reasons. Backup goaltender Mikey Stanzler did a commendable job in an emergency start. The majority of the goals he allowed were flukes, and he appeared to be more comfortable with his new stand-up style. Franchise Hockey ends its regular season next Friday against Saint Teresa. The team is still searching for its first win. Box Score: 3rd Period: King 10 (Peters, Ragoobeer) Goaltending: Stanzler 0-4 (13 GA) Captain's Thoughts: Losing games sucks, but losing players hurts in a different way. JP went out in style and Kit played well on defense. Both played extended minutes and came through for their teammates one last time. But the past is in the past. Driving instructors will disagree with me, but the rearview mirror is irrelevant. The team we play next week is one of the best in the league. On top of that, starting school will be overwhelming, and we won't be practicing as a team next week. With all that said, I bid everyone a fond farewell. I'm headed to New York City to relax and visit family. I can't wait to play next Friday, and I think a week away from hockey to rejuvenate and recover will be good for the Franchise. Get some rest, and I'll see you in class.- Your Captain #37 |
